I've had my Explorer Sport about 1 week. It replaced a 2011 Explorer Limited. The Radiator fans on the Sport sounds like a mini tornado. Very loud. Even my wife commented on how loud it is. The 2011 Limited was not nearly this loud. I know folks on this board are going to accuse me of whining but I just wanted to share my observations. Maybe the Ecoboost requires extra cooling but these fans are reving pretty high just sitting in neutral after start up.

I should have my Sport in about a week, so I can check it out myself. I know that in my Mustang, the 5.0 engine gets really hot while just idling and my fan IS a freaking tornado!

The only time when I've caught my sport's fan running is after shutting the vehicle off in the garage. They run for a few seconds after shutting the engine off and do seem loud when everything is off. Often my wife comes to pick me up and when I walk up on the ex while it is idling, it is difficult to even tell the engine is running.

ditto on what rem says --- shutdown cooling is what I hear....

used to have a ford probe gt that actually had a turbo shutdown timer from the factory that stayed running and pumping oil thru the turbos until they cooled enough... That was very odd way back in the late 80's

I have taken a 1 minute video to illustrate the loud fans. This is a cold start after being parked for 3 hours. Notice how the fans kick into "tornado mode" at 28 seconds.

I think most people don't notice because the cabin is insulated well.
I regularly use remote start, and I've noticed the same thing... SUPER loud.
Louder than my old 5.4V8 F150 (minus the flowmasters.... lol)

Weird yours has a delay, mine always sound like that. Maybe based on engine temp?
With it being in the 80's, the engine bay gets super hot... I noticed that it was still really hot even after sitting an hour.
My engine temp guage rides just below the middle...

That's completely normal sounding for the fans. They will occasionally turn on high speed even during a cold start to keep contamination from building up on the electrical contacts inside the fans. On previous model vehicles with the 3.5L engine there was a TSB to reprogram the PCM to enable the cooling fans more often. All vehicles built after a certain date (sometime in 2012) already come with the newer calibration to run the fans on high to "blow out" this contamination.

Maybe they're loud so you know they are working? The only problem I have I when its really hot and the fan is working higher, I turn my car off and the fan stays on for a bit. That's fine and normal, but then when the fan shut off it starts squeaking as its coming to a stop. Sounds horrible.

...are we all sure here that the temp setting isnt set to Auto and the AC is blasting at some point during all this?...

Sound is from outside the vehicle in the engine bay, not air from A/C.

I have a 2013 limited and mine does that especially on cold start.

The 3.5L Ecoboost engines produce more heat. I would be glad my fans ran that fast. Especially since new cars don't really cool themselves well while idling because they are designed to prevent air from getting inside the engine bay causing drag and thus, are designed to cool when moving to increase fuel efficiency. You'll be happy when you accelerate a lot in the city.

You know what, I didn't even think of this. My wife was just saying how our Sport always has the fan full blast (outside). Anytime we get out its like "omg it's so loud" haha but I know it's doing its job :)
