This forum has been responsible for getting my EX to 350,000 in the Rust Belt. I know the 1-uppers out there are dying to chime in but I don't care what part of the world you drive in, getting a truck with this many moving parts and lets face it, a marginal design at best; is no small task. Especially when you throw in the kind of potholes we develop up here in Rust-achewsetts! A couple of. All joint jobs on this vehicle alone can make you want to call it quits. And rocker panels, what are those? I think I used to have them ...,, in the 90's maybe?!?
Anyway I decided to finally start guving back a little now that I got this dope phone. So I just dropped my engine and tranny back in after a light overhaul, new front/rear main seal job, and clutch/pressure plate/slave cylinder/master cylinder/hydraulic line replacement. Took it for a ride after many other adventuresome electrical issues and "why do I have all these extra brackets, clips and parts issues". Looked long and hard for any leaks from the first good, hot pricing run and noticed Mercon dripping from the M5 trans to transfer case adapter seam ( it was foamy too ). Of course it was coming from the top and I couldn't see jack. A couple hours later my interior is on the driveway and I have the transmission hump partially tuna canned to get the shifter cover out. The leak was coming from the shifter cover to tranny gearbox mating surface. I had taken this off while the tranny was out go install new shifter gates which I broke while power shifting with no clutch. Apparently the seal did not like being thrown back on with no RTV or even better a new seal, because it was pissing out the back side right under those notorious plugs at the shifter base. I wish I could figure out how to attach pics because this image of my truck with no interior, its tranny hump ripped open and the gear box wide open and exposed is priceless! It literally looks like open heart surgery for a Ford!

Did you replace those notorious rubber plugs with freeze plugs? You will regret not doing this now while it is cheap and easy... Or you can buy another transmission like I did. :( Drain the fluid now and pour into the shifter hole before reinserting the shifter, easy way to refill.

When I did the auto to 5-speed conversion I scored a rebuilt M5OD which already had metal replacement plugs.

When I performed the auto to 5-speed conversion I was lucky enough to score a rebuilt M5OD that had replacement metal plugs.

Good. If you want to power shift buy a cheap mazda sedan, they are dirt cheap in my area. :)
