M5od wire harness

If you have a first gen with a manual transmission, I would like to know the arrangement of the wires. A picture at the terminals would be great, but just a description would be plenty helpful. If it would be easier to text or email pics instead of posting them, pm me and I will send you my info.

The two from the engine for the oil sensors are easy. But I need to match up the two wires each for neutral and reverse switches. And apparently there should also be a jump loop for two other wires. But I don't know which ones are which on the chassis side of the harness.

This is not an emergency. So help at your convenience of course.

I would look for a manual transmission truck at the junkyard. Ranger or Mazda B4000 of the same vintage or a Navajo (if you can find one). There's two plugs that make the connection (right around the brake booster/ master cylinder assembly), it might be attached to the plastic fender splash guard (mine isn't anymore). All you need is a harness for a 4.0 v6 M5OD (I don't think the harness for the 2.3 or 3.0 is the same, maybe a simple repinning of a few wires?)

After that there's one or two connection points on the transmission, the transfer case harness is separate from this. The connection points are for the neutral safety switch and the reverse light switch, (if I missed something please correct me).
 






Just to throw it out there, I have a manual harness from a 1990 Ranger that had the 3.0L in it. Snagged it in the junkyard before it went to the crusher. It also had a manual transfer case but was split. Wish I would have grabbed the linkage and everything though.

It needs some minor repair but it's all there. If someone wants it, let me know since I doubt I'll ever use it.
 






Which models have a neutral safety switch? I have one from a 92 explorer and the only plug in on the transmission is the backup light switch. I have had my transmission out before, and I can shift into 4x4 low while in gear so I know this to be true.
 






If I remember correctly, the 4x4 control module logic relies on the NSS for the automatic only, but uses the clutch pedal sensor instead for the manual. In both cases, the 4x4 control module needs to sense that the speed is below a certain threshold (very low speed - virtually stopped) AND either the automatic is in neutral OR the clutch is released in the manual. which means that yes, in theory you could shift into 4x4 low while in gear. I don;t think there is a NSS in the M5OD.

I'm pretty sure the only wires I have hooked up to my M5OD is the reverse lights.
 












My EVTM shows a "BK/W" (black/white?) wire on C118 going to the neutral safety switch. It's BK/W on both sides. Obviously this doesn't match yours so I think it's another fail in the EVTM but at least one in C118 goes to the neutral switch. Naturally there's also no manual transmission page in my 1991 EVTM so it's hard finding these. There's also no C118 listed in the pinouts either.

I can say from testing that I did not long ago that the Red on C118 is key on hot. The Purple/Yellow is for TCC lockup on the A4LD. The Orange/Yellow is for the 3/4 shift solenoid on the A4LD. Those 3 I know for a fact and they're the same 1991-1994.
 






Looking at the starting circuit, the Red/Light blue wire on the Gray Terminal goes to the clutch triple function switch. On an auto transmission equipped vehicle (assuming it's not a Limited), this is jumpered to a Pink wire (the cap for the triple function switch has a jumper built into it, which then goes to the auto transmission Park/neutral position switch (NSS). From the transmission it comes back as Red/Light blue again and goes to the starter solenoid.

For the manual, it's similar. You remove the cap from the clutch triple function switch, plug it in to your clutch. But you do have to deal with the wiring that would normally go to the NSS in the auto transmission. You will need to connect the pink wire (which comes from the clutch triple function switch and connect it to the red/light blue wire which goes to the starter solenoid. The function of the Auto NSS is replaced by the function of the clutch triple function switch.

I was wrong in my previous post. There is a NSS in the manual transmission (or at least in some of them). This is connected to the ECU. If you are using an ECU from a manual, you will need to connect this. This is the Light Blue/Yellow and Grey/Red wires I believe from your C118 connector - they also go through the clutch triple function switch. The Grey/Red wire is a ground This wire connects to several items including the self test connector. If you use the auto computer with the manual transmission, you need to jumper the Light Blue/Yellow and Grey/Red wires together. If I remember that's what I ended up doing.

I just replaced my manual transmission in my 94 with a later model one without the NSS and it works fine. Haven't tried to start it in gear but with the clutch switch it wouldn't matter anyway.
 






With the poor running condition have to been able to do the self diagnostics? It may be unrelated to the transmission swap. Did you remember to plug the O2 sensors back in properly? Assuming you pulled the exhaust ypipe off the do the transmission swap
