I just installed a Mac catback exhaust on my '99 5.0 Explorer E.B. The exhaust begins to rattle sometimes under acceleration, now its 3 inch pipe so it robs opn the shock but i put a radiator hose over it to act as a damper. Could there be somethign in the exhaust itself rattling? Any ideas?

mac exhaust rattle

the rattle turns into an annoying ringing under accelerataion. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I am surprised that you can hear a rattle with that exhaust on. I have removed my MAC cat back exhaust, it was a little to loud in the cab at around 2.5 - 3K RPM. But you might want to check to see if it is rubbing against the floor in the back...where is comes over the axels, a ringing sounds like it is a metal against metal... maybe the u-bolts, .. Hope this helps..

Thanks for the advice Jeremy. Im going to check it out today.....did you have any problems with the rattling when you had yours installed? How do you think I can deaden the ringing if its the metal aga9inst metal ifI can't really pull it away hfrom the part?...I tried using a sliced radiator hose, didn't work too well. Any clue?

Do you know exactly where the noise is coming from? I would start the engine and crawl under the vehicle and have a look. Let me know when you find out exactly where it si coming.... from there maybe I can give better advice..

If it is only on your shock try and tie up away from it, like with a coat hanger.... sounds funny but whatever works...

Let me know what you find out

I have installed the MAC on several Explorers and found if the adjustment on the ball and socket over the axle isn't perfect it will tap on the shock(as you stated) or on the bumper because of the 3" tubing and 3.5" tip. You will also find that readjustment will be necessary in about 5k miles once the new system "settles in" then you won't have to mess with it anymore. I have one(MAC cat-back) on my Explorer as well. Something else to look for would where the rear hanger goes through the rubber bracket next to the frame, I have had a few comebacks because of this not being adjusted correctly, once again that supports the statement of the ball and socket over the axle being adjusted perfectly! And one last thing to look for is the slip joint on the inlet side next to the factory ball and socket(don't know why Ford used one slip joint and one ball and socket but it is what we have to live with anyway!) if you do not torque the clamp down COMPLETELY in small incriments through a couple of heat cycles it WILL rattle because of the gap in the two pipes...Already had this problem on another brand of cat back exhaust for the Explorer! The ball and socket over the axle on the MAC catback is a blessing and a curse, it cures installation problems but if you aren't familiar with the system or this is a first time install it will freaking drive you crazy before you ever get the damn thing right. I have installed so many that it isn't a problem now! :burnout:
