MAF Problem

aldive said:
I always keep old parts.

I just took the Granatelli MAF ( I sold it ) off the truck prior to this install. The truck ran beautifully with the Granatelli.

Hopefully I will hear from them tomorrow ....

Yeah, I love my Grantelli, big improvement over stock!!!

What sort of "improvement"?

That's too bad you have to take it all apart in winter. I thought for sure my intake was causing my cold weather issues, but I am 95% certain it was related to connection issues. My chip had it's rotary switch routed into the engine space rather than the cabin as it should have been. That caused the whole chip to get twisted. The pins on the chip had even got twisted and Wayne spent a lot of time straightening them for me, as well as testing them to make sure chip wasn't damaged. In addition to that, I knocked out that middle piece Doug posted about recently and the chip is well seated now. I just wish I took the effort to do it right the first time! While my chip was in the SE USA getting revamped, it was damn cold up here in Calgary. I hate to say it, but I'm almost hoping for one more cold snap to test my theory (it's in the 50's now during the day in Calgary). Otherwise, my Ex is running awesome now as I switch back and forth between Bamachips and Hypnotic Illusions. ;)

Just FWIW, my cold symptom was this.
I would start it on a cold morning ( 30f or there about ) and it would run like absolute sh**. As soon as the engine would warm up, it would purr like a kitten. I did some research here and the symptoms were identical to that of the ooM12 failed intake O rings. So I am thining okay intake.
Take parts out of the equasion. Remove the MAC and the next morning, problem gone.
Is it the MAC or the Pro-M I dunno, could be either.
Do I care ? No. It works fine right now and when spring arrives ( please Lord SOON !! ) I'll put the MAC and PRO-M back on and all will be well in my world.

I've had my Pro-M on my X for almost a year and have never had any problems with it. Had to have it recalibrated for the 24lb injectors but thats it.

Another Pro-M success story begins.... ;)

... and continues.

UPDATE on my returned Pro-M MAF

When I returned the MAF, I was told that I would be called as soon as they received the MAF and be kept appraised of the status.

After 10 days and not hearing a thing from Pro Flow ( yes, I checked the tracking on the returned MAF and know when they received it ), I sent them an E Mail requesting a status report. Later that day, I received a phone call from someone at Pro Flow; I do not recall his name, wanting to know why I sent them an E Mail requesting a status update. Once again I had to relate the saga of the returned MAF. I was told that they would know something in about a week. I promptly informed the “gentleman” on the phone that was unacceptable to me. At this point, their representative started getting rude and profane. I then informed them that they could keep the MAF and to please credit my Visa card for the return. He said that would be fine and I would be credited in about a week. Again, I told them that was unacceptable and that I wanted the credit that business day.

I got a call back from them later that day informing me that my Visa had been credited. That was on Thursday, today is Saturday and there is still no credit on my Visa.

With this company, it appears that the head doesn’t have a clue what the tail is doing. Customer service is imaginary at best. A Dale Carnegie Course ® would serve them well.

I have heard of similar stories from other people. I know that some members here have had good product and service from Pro Flow, for that I am glad; it just wasn’t that way for me.

The MAF that I got as a gift turned into a nightmare. Hell will freeze before I ever do business with Pro Flow again. Not only did the product they sent me not work with my truck, but also their complete lack of customer care made this experience horrendous.

Al, sorry to hear it and your experience permanently solidified my decision to never score a Pro-M product for any reason. It's really unfortunate that you sold your Granatelli, because you seemed pretty satisfied with that one. I hope it all gets worked out. I've been given the credit card runaround before. At least you have the "chargeback" option in your back pocket.

Good luck.

Yikes !!!!!!
I had a very easy time talking to them, and working with them.

Go figure

I also had problems with a new Pro-M MAF. I sent them an e-mail and they also blamed the install. I told them that I could put the stock MAF back in and the motor ran fine. It took 2 or 3 e-mails like that to get them to issue a RMA number to me. I had to stir the pot to get a status reports. It turned out that there was a problem with the clibration. Runs great now.

Several more days have passed and no credit from them yet.

Chargeback! Let your card issuer go to bat for you. Things always happen quickly once the chargeback process kicks into high gear and also penalizes them. Having too many chargebacks on your record can get you suspended with your card issuer (as in Pro-M).

You live and you learn, atleast you did get your full payment back but what you received in knowledge is worth alot more ;).

When you're in the neighborhood we can try an 80mm GT MAF and see if the larger size does anything for your performance.

Thanks Doug.

I look forward to doing that test, Doug.

Al,

Over at TCCoA, the 02 GT MAF is the upgrade of choice. I'm sure Doug will take care of you!

Pray tell, what is TCCoA?

Thanks .....

I can't get any matches either! :fire: They talk about these all the time. They like them better than the 80mm Lightning MAFs.

I can definatly see why after looking at the transfer functions in the calibration files for both, n/a that is.

There is a range of voltage VS. airflow and this in turn is the output signal to the PCM. This is where adjustability and meter calibrations matter most. Where a 80mm Lightning MAF is set up for more flow and therefor the airflow numbers(measured in lbs per Min) at lower voltages are going to be setup higher then the numbers for a n/a GT. This is because it has a 5.4 engine for one and a supercharger for the other. It will require more air at idle then the 4.6 GT.

This in turn will help get better readings at lower RPM's and in the mid-range as well. It's all in the calibration and there again if this is off by the slightest bit then you can loose alot of drivability. This is why I would suggest a standard V8 MAF, be it F150/GT/Explorer, more then a 90mm maf from a S/C Cobra for a n/a upgrade.

Thanks, Doug.

Doug,

I knew that! :D Actually, Dennis Reinhart had a write up at Brian Herron's MTC Forums that pretty much stated what you just posted. Now the question is, would this be a good upgrade for a SOHC or just stick with the stocker?
