Usually the cost is about the same. Magnaflows tend to have a bit of a higher pitch, but I've found their sound tends to be more even through the RPMs. Flowmasters sound vary based on the model, maybe a 50 delta similar to Magnaflow.

I like to recommend a Magnaflow muffler and 2.25" tailpipe for early X's.

Honestly, not to **** my own setup, but magnaflows are LOUD. If you don't want alot of noise, you may want to look at a flowie 50 delta

my exhaust isn't real loud... it has a good growl at speed though, I have a flowmaster non delta 40 series, and I love it, although I wish I had a V8 and duals....

Well I go to hear a guys Ravin muffler with single pipe out on his 93 Ex and it sounded better than my flowmaster 40 with single in dual out.

I'm trying to find a reason to make the change, but I just had mine installed 6 months ago.

alaskan jack where would find Ravin mufflers on the internet

if you want performance go with magnaflow because its a straight threw design.

i want performance and sound i have a stock replacement muffler on there so i guess anything would be better (performance wise).

A magnaflow with 2.25" piping (or even 2.5") and a resonator, topped off with a KKM and some dynomatting will sound good and offer some of the best performance.
Magnaflows do resonate, make no mistake about it, but IMHO they sound good, and the performance is unbeatable. Its the perfect combo of backpressure and free flow.
Good luck

what is a resonater and do i have to buy the resonater seperate, and how much will it cost

Well, resonators are mostly no name generic brand. I have a 12" resonator directly after the muffler on the upbend where it goes over the axle. It cost me about $50, but that was including install time. I suspect it was about $20 for the resonator, $5 for the piping, and $25 for the extra work (cutting the old, etc)

and what does the resonater do.

kill resonance.. its actually ill named.. its actually the opposite of a resonator, but everyone just calls it a resonator.

do flowmasters need resonaters or do the chambers act as a built in resonator

Well I don't know myself. But I must add that with my flowmaster I noticed a power gain immediately just wish it was throatier like Chris's Ravin. I might have smaller piping, I didn't know at the time that pipe size made much difference.

He is running a kkm also but I can't remember if we discussed power gains.

what flowmaster series do you have alaskanjack. do you have original piping and your opinion on the sound?

OK I found Chris's info on another thread:

I love how my FM 40 sounds, but I have headers too, shouldn't be much of a difference though. Ravin mufflers are at http://www.goravin.com/

A resonator helps smooth out and speed up the exhaust flow. It does this with a spiral pattern of vanes which apply spin to the gases. The gases then flow faster and don't bounce off the sides of the pipes as much. Resonance is usually caused by the gases slowing down too much and banging on the pipes.

I have a Flowmaster 40 non Delta installed new pipes from the cats back. Single in Dual out.

My 91 has what we used to call cherry bombs, but I know that some shops install a muffler that is long just like a cherry bomb. Anyway my 91 the pipe Y's past the cats and runs into seperate cherry bombs then the pipes run out the rear, well almost. Sound isn't bad either but no rumbling.
