Does anyone have a write-up on the procedure for converting auto hubs to manual hubs? From what I understand the procedure is fairly easy, but I can't seem to find any specifics on it.

thanks in advance

Basically it is an unbolt-rebolt situation, just using different style spindle nuts.

Here is the NAPA part number for the spindle nuts that fit the Dana 35 front end on the Explorer... WAY cheaper than Warn's conversion parts. Use the NAPA number to cross refernce to something even cheaper, like Auto Zone. I've seen these things retail for around $8.00 a set.

I did a write up on the change over here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114968&highlight=spindle+nuts

Glfredrick, there are different grades of spindle nuts, I dont like the cheepo's, the inner nut is not thick enough to hold the pre-load and the pin breaks off too easy.

the lock ring washersm the cheapo ones the holes are too bug and the tab that locks into the spindle is too small and rounded.

I have found Carquest has them in stock, cheap enough for me to buy spares, about approx $20 a side for all 3 pieces.....

Thanks a lot guys. Those were excellent write-ups. The procedure seems very simple and straight forward. No more $300 Ford hubs for me.

The Ranger Station doesn't say anythink about taking the big nut off. Or is it me?

Mine both broke off. You can get them off a BII or ranger at a wrecking yard.

No you cant, Bronco II's and early rangers had Dana 28 Dana TTB's much smaller spindle........

I appreaciate hearing that Jamie... I forwarded the NAPA number, and they are genearlly name brand Spicer parts - should be the good stuff there.

I get mine from my kid's shop - and my cost is $8.00 a pair, but that is probably my special "I'm the dad" price... :D I get a lot of that. Anyway, I haven't had a single problem with mine and they've been on there a year and a half now. Haven't even backed off in torque...

Thanks. I checked, you are right. I bought some on Sunday, I was able to return them. If I had waited untill mine went and tried to return them in a couple of months it would have been too late. You saved me $70!

These same spindle nuts are on D44s.
