Manual transmission problem

Hello

When I down shift during breaking the transmission makes a large clunk sound every 3 to 5 seconds but remains in gear slowing the vehicle. I have the 1994 manual explorer sport and trans fluid is normal. Is this the clutch or more serious?

does it do it in everygear when you're slowing down? at certain speeds or at any speed?

Hello Namitey,

It happens mostly in 1st, 2nd and 3rd as I am slowing down using the engine as resistance, probably under 50 mph. It probably is not gear dependant – I just don’t usually generate enough resistance in 4th or 5th.

It sounds a little like switching into four wheel drive.
It also does not start until engine is up to operating temp.

I have other symptoms that point to clutch, slave cylinder and throwout bearing being bad (hard shifting). Could the clunk just be the clutch slipping under load?? I am wondering if there is something more serious wrong with the transmission.

check the u-joints. they might have gone bad. if they have never been replaced might be a good idea to replace them. i cant remember how much they were (not very exspensive) and my dad helped me change them since he had a workbench vice.

I kinda doubt its the u-joints but its worth it to check them. I kinda doubt its the clutch as well. when the clutch on my bronco II went it would start slipping when i stepped on the gas to much. if it happens when the engine is warmed up I'm kind of doubting its the transmission. its not something like the engine backfiring is it?

I don't think it is a back fire. I actually took it into an ATRA transmission shop in Minneapolis today. They think it may be a tranfer case issue. They are taring it down right now, so I will let you know what they think the problem is tomorrow.

Duh! i didnt even think of the transfer case. I've heard of the t-case making noise when deaccelerating. I've gone through 2 electric shift t-case in my trucks. do a search there is a lot of info on t-cases going bad.
