Matt's '92/'99 4X4 V8/4R70W swap!

Oooohhhh I like the black. Did you paint it? Or did the builder?

Quit makin me drool over your fancy stroker crankshaft. and your H-beam rods

Oh, seeing your timing chain reminded me. What are your thoughts on advancing the cam timing? I know most cams have about 4* ground in and from what I've read 6* is about as far as is helpful.

Thanks turbo!

It feels like I allready have a v8 tonight.

It's bone-ass cold out side, the air is dense, the fan clutch is dissengaged and my truck is pullin like a monster.

I would run that cam of yours straight up with no advance or retard.:D
If a cam is ground right for a vehicle, no adjustment should be necessary. Advancing would up the torque, lower HP, retarding would up the HP, lower torque. I saw the specs you posted with your cam and I'd honestly leave it 0 deg.
Did you get 9:1 comp. pistons? If so, you'll be good to go. A higher compression upwards of 10:1 would bring a higher static compression that would need to bled off with more duration on a cam OR a slight retard in CAM.
Your build is coming along! Keep it up.

Oh ya, one more thing...10:1 compression also means 93 octane gas. Premium gas, premium price at the pump.
If you haven't bought pistons yet, get stock ratio 9:1. I've run both ratios in my Mustang and there's not enough difference to make me run high octane gas again, Especially not in a truck application. You can bump the timing usually to around 14 deg from the stock 6-10 deg. which helps a lot.
I built my 351 with forged pistons in case I decided to go with forced induction down the road but that would just be stupid of me now. I've got more power in that thing than I'll ever need, or want. Save the crazy HP/Torque for a more suitable and practical vehicle, maybe with a lower COG at least.

here in Denver 10:1 still means 85 octane :) LOL

I would think a black block would make it difficult to spot leaks? I was under the impression the reason you paint a block a bright color is its easier to spot problems/leaks/cracks, etc

Regardless, I didnt paint my GT-40p, sometimes I wish I did in the BII!!
I was too excited just to get it installed LOL!!

My compression will end up around 9.8:1.

I want more low end torque. This cam is more mid to high so I figured if I advance a few mor degrees then I'll get some grunt for shenanigans on the streets and the top end for major highway fun, Which is most of my driving.

I went with the blue to help spot leaks.

Oh and I buy premium gas as it is.

you want to keep your low end? I suggest no more then a 2.5 single exhaust from muffler back
:)
2.75 would be okay but not many exhaust shops carry or use 2.75, 3" = you lose low end

I'm gonna keep mycurrent exhaust which is mostly 2.25.

I can't wait to hear it! My car sounds awesome as it is. It should be Freakin awesome with the new engine.

Is that 9.8:1 compression? That's a good figure, but it needs the right cam. Did they suggest that cam you have for that compression? That will be very strong if the parts are matched well.

I had my builder paint the engine, they do anything. I've never had a black engine, it's just to be different for me.

9.8 is within that cams working range I've been told.

That's what the estimated compression will be with the flat top 4.8cc pistons I am gonna get.

I think black engine will be cool.

You can paint a nice skull on the intake and call it "the punisher".

OH I imagine I could spot leaks on any color engine! even rust!
Black is cool, its the new brown!

Opinions: j-mod or shift kit.

I have no problem with really hard shifts.

Edit: Meh, nevermind. I'm gonna get a shift kit. I like transgo.

Ok nevermind again. I'll do the jmod then if it's not adequet I'll install a shift kit later.

woohoo!

Christmas bonus is in, and bigger than expected!

I think I will get pistons, rings, and bearings.

Phew. I just got a reminder of why I'm doing this instead of buying a mustang or something.

There is 1/2 inch of solid ice on the road and I just made it up a 35-40 degree hill.

Right past a minivan in the ditch and a sport compact hangin halfway over a precipice.

seriously.

Both front wheels of what looked like a neon or something were off the ground over theedge of a VERY steep dropoff.

I've gained almost all the knowledge I need to do this swap from this site.
I'm glad I found it.
