Memory seat problem

My drivers seat's front would not move up and down. It has been that way since I purchased the Explorer last year. It was at the top of it's travel and wasn't a problem. I decided today to take it apart and see if I could fix it. The good news is by pulling the motor apart and cleaning the brushes, the motor started working. The bad news is it moves the wrong way. When I push to go up, it goes down, and down is up. It's also the same for the back.

The only thing I can think of is if I swapped the armatures between the front and back. They looked the same but then I didn't look that close. Anyone here have any experience with working on the memory seat?

I would say that the memory seat function doesn't have any affect on the normal manual parts or functioning. I believe the operating parts are the same as a normal power seat.

Can the wiring be swapped at the connectors? I don't know about how the assembly of a motor would allow changing polarity internally. I suggest swapping the wiring at a connector leading to those motors.

Say, have you still got any ARC air suspension parts? I still lack a steering rate sensor, and the rear height adjustment bracket. Regards,

The hall effect sensor for the memory seat is on the opposite end of each motor from the brushes. In fact, the memory seat circuits are a major part of the power seat. I'm sure at this point that I must of switched armatures between the front and back motors. They must be round opposite of each other.

I just reversed the wiring to each up/down motor and all is well. The memory function is also working right. Reversing the wires was far easier than pulling the motors again.

Excellent. Having worked on those parts, can you suggest whether the memory seat parts could be swapped into a normal power seat?

I have not yet changed the wiring to install 99 Limited seats into my 98 Mountaineer. The original seats are much more comfortable than the Limited seats, and I would rather keep the original seats. Any thoughts?

I think the big stopper would be the wiring going to the seat. I have not looked at a normal power seat but I would think swapping the parts over would work. You wouldn't have to take the motor and drive system apart like I did. It was really a pain, even the second time I pulled everything apart trying to find why the directions were reversed on up and down. I wish I had thought of the armatures being swapped when I pulled it apart the second time. Swapping the wires around did take care of that problem.

I wish I had taken pictures of everything when I had it apart. If anyone has any questions on repairing a memory seat, just ask.

You must be mistaking me for someone else. The only parts I might sale would be computer parts. My first love (after my wife) is computers. I've been repairing computer systems since the mid-70's. I repair what I can on my own cars because I don't trust mechanics. I've had too many mechanic friends who have told me too many stories. Access to Ford's own manuals on CD really help until you work on something like the memory seat.
