I have a mountaineer with all wheel drive. I am thinking about getting the All Terrain tires. I don't do any serious off roading, that explains the AWD, but I do live in upstate New York and would like the ability to go on dirt, mud, and deep snow without worrying about getting stuck.

Ford, and most manufactures, are pushing going with the same type of tire that came with the vehicle. That would be M/S tread, not All Terrains. I currently have the original Good Year RT/S's. They are poor performers in snow.

Would All Terrains cause any serious issues for an AWD vehicle?

The tread pattern on the M/S tires looks weak for all manufactures. Should I assume the more aggressive tread will handle snow better?

get whatever tire you feel like getting.

hell with ford and these idiots that have been telling you to stay with what came on the truck.

ford puts the most all around, inexpensive tire capable of doing [almost] everything except good off road growling!

www.tirerack.com check them out. sears and ntb [national tire and battery] price match [to a degree].

i think most places won't do [way] oversize/overstock tires on the explorers/mounty's.

research it and get what will work best for you.

Thanks xlt-sport,

Thats what I did this morning. Went with the A/T's.

I just put my second set of LTX A/Ts on. Got 65,000 out of first set, and they still looked great. A good choice, you'll be happy.

Yeah, I keep waiting for my LTX's to wear out so I can justify getting 33's and wider wheels. Dang things wear too long.

Not too long ago I worked in a tire shop as a third job ( don't ask ) The Michelins LTX balanced out the best with the fewest added weight.
What I mean by that it they are a nicer riding tire.
I had them on my Blazer and I LOVED them. They rode so fantastic !! One day soon these Good Years will run thin. There is no question in my mind which tire I will go to next. How's that for an endorcement.

I have the LTX M/S and love them - I have not had any problems in deep snow or in mud. I will buy another set when these wear out - I have 18K on mine and they still look new.

I think you will be happy with either set -

Jeff

I have the LTX M/S on my 2000. When I took off the Wranglers and put on the LTX it was like driv ing a new vehicle. Smooth, excellent handling and quiet. A real pleasure.

:D It really wears out too long specially when you rotate the tires on schedule. I love it!

I'm gettin' some 30 x 9.50 Michelin LTX A/T's pretty soon. At just 25,000 miles, the ol Dunlop A/T's are down to where the rear end breaks loose in the rain (and that's with only 3.27 gears). I can't have that. Plus it rides like a logwagon...

I have Michelin LTX M/S on my X, they work perfect for
me. The traction in snow is good. where I hunt in the
winter the small roads in the woods often has 1 feet
deep snow or more and it feels just like I drive a snowmobile.:)

I also have the LTX M/S on the Explorer, put them on at 40k, now at 120K they've still got life! Great tires no question. Order them from TireRack and save some money.

Rhett, I dont know what it is about Dunlops, but I have Dunlop SP Sport 4000s on my Lexus and they're totally bald after 20k. Horrible! Good smooth tires though.

I actually was debating on the M/S or the A/T tires and after about a month of research, I decided on the A/Ts. I HIGHLY recommend them, they are very quiet on the highway but yet they are very good in the snow. I previously had the BFG TA KO's and I loved them, but for the amount of off-roading that I do (3-5 times a year), I went looking for a quieter, but still agressive tire. Hope this makes you feel better, I guess you've already purchased the A/Ts.
