My GF bought a '98 Sport a few months ago. Used car lot, auction car, one key, one fob, no owner's manual. The car lot (CarMax) has already said they'll pay for extra fobs and keys, and the labor to reprogram the computer, so that's not a problem.

However, the key supplied with the truck doesn't open either door. It works the ignition (obviously) and the rear hatch, but that's it.

Was the truck supposed to come with two keys? Was it possibly rekeyed at some point?

If it makes a difference, the truck also has the keypad on the driver's door.

From the factory, Explorers come with two keys and two fobs. The kets are to open the doors, ignition, and rear hatch. Since your girlfriend's key doesn't open the doors, my guess is it was rekeyed and whoever did it was too lazy to rekey the doors as well.

when i bought my x used it came with three keys. but only one of them opened the doors and all three worked in the ignition. i got tired of that situation and asked the dealership why that was going on. they thought maybe the key needed to be smoothed/polished so i let them try it and it fixed the problem. i guess the doors are just a little more finicky about the keys being perfect. try to find someone to do this service for you.

The doors and ignition are usually pretty forgiving..tell ehr to try wiggling the key in and out while turning it..maybe the key has a sligh flaw...but I mean I was able to open a 96 Eddie bauer and start it all with the key from my 95. The eddie bauer only had 47,000 miles so it was not like it was really worn out.

LOL...the 96 Eddie bauer was one of the vehicles from my dad's company. He had it because his car was in the shop. I was suprised when my brother locked me out that I was able to unlock and start the vehicle with my 95 keys.
