Moab! May 31-June 2, 2002

Saturday night group dinner!

I just made reservations at the Branding Iron restaurant for 8pm on Saturday night. Having dinner at 8pm should give us all time to get off the trail and not have to rush like we have in the past.

The Branding Iron is 3 miles south of town on the east side of the highyway. We will be ordering off their regular menu.

Here is a link to their website:

Mike, that's not Flat Iron Mesa; you're thinking of Poison Spider Mesa. A bunch of us did that very thing last year. We did Poison Spider Mesa while the BigDawgs went on Golden Spike, then after finishing Poison Spider Mesa we went around to Gold Bar Rim to meet up with the Golden Spike group coming out on Gold Bar Rim. It made a very good day of wheeling for everyone. That's a good idea for modifieds to run that day that haven't been on those trail before. How many would be interested in doing that and running with Mike?

Mike, I might be interested in doing Poison Spider Mesa. I'm not sure that I will do the Golden Spike, so that would be a good alternative.
It doesn't look like the turnout is going to be that big, so if we have smaller groups, that could mean we could get through some of the trails sooner than planned. Do we have alternative trails that we might want to include should this happen?

We would like to do Poison spider without doing the big loop. We would have to take the little detour over to the Launching pad though.

We were also thinking of doing the Gemini Bridges if people think the scenery is worth the trip.

Not sure if this is a good place to post this but here goes. I live in MI. I have read and seen some great pictures of moab. I have a 91x 32's locker up front and limited slip rear. 3 body lift and coil spacer and shakles. Are there any trails I could go on? I am thinking about taking a week off and coming to the later run.

You should be sitting pretty good. Maybe add some rocker panels and maybe stronger bumpers if you dont want dents and maybe skid plates if you dont have any. From what I have heard is that is what is needed and that there are trails for all levels. Heck take the time out and come join us on this run. Should be a blast the more the better. And dont say no AC cause I dont have any and should be crusing through vegas early afternoon baking on the drive out there :D .

Matt

Join us. I am running 2" susp and 3" body lift w/ 35's and I plan on running some good trails. Although I am not worried about body damage. I will also be locked front and rear. I cant wait for Moab. I am counting down the days. Sign up and sent Rick the 20.00 deposit and we will see you there.

You are set up fine for doing Lions back. You just have to be stupid to try it. {Oh wait Gerald did it)Funny it is the Texans that like doing Lions back......LOL
The part I don't like about Lions back is if your vehicle breaks you can be hurt bad which has nothing to do how well you drive.
If you do some of the other trails you will do things that are steeper and harder then Lions back.....
Just my .02 cents

Don't worry about what your vehicle has, remember there was a LOT of stock Explorer's and the way they talked at the dinner table they had just as much fun.....

I don't think anyone can use the excuse there Explorer isn't built good enough......

thanks for responding perry, love your truck. yeah everyone in texas (including me) has egos way to big for their own good, (not to offend anyone) but i would probably try it if i was there just cus if anything happened all i can say is i would die doing what i love! not really i would probably get there and **** my pants.

It is very hard to understand really how steep that thing is until you see it.
We walked up it the first night we were there and I tell you that was hard in itself. The first part is so steep you have to walk at an ankle to get up it.
Then that place the fourrunner went off, the "V" is about 3' deep. Once you start up you can't change your mind, you have to go to the top.
I think Gerald has a write up about it someplace and I have heard the story about it and I don't plan on doing it anytime soon.

You can kind of tell the angle from these two shots, but they don't quite do it justice. You can kind of tell by the angle of Matt's truck. I rode along with Matt on this one and it was a little unnerving. All you can see on the way up is blue sky. You'll need a decent approach/departure angle to avoid scraping bumper just to get on it, but after that it's not technically hard. It's more unnerving than anything else. I plan on running this one after my truck has had a while of test running under it's hood. Just make sure that your rig is in top condition when attempting this one, especially in the brake department.

ok

Hey is that the same hill on the cover of the march volume of 4wheelparts? if it isnt then where is that at?

Here's a few posts from previous Lion's Back

Misc prev posts by me concerning Lion's Back:
-------------------------------------------
Chris, yeah, I've never read anywhere else about what you specifically "do" when doing Lion's Back. Every writing I've read by those who have done it simply mentions - yeah I "did" Lion's Back - without explaining what really goes on during the "do" of doing it. And I forgot to mention in my previous post that the wind is about 40 mph up on top too. Just more fun thrown in if it starts raining.

I'll repeat again that from a technical rockcrawling standpoint it is an easy ride. If you have sufficient approach angle to climb the initial hill on the "rump" of the lion you are on your way. The difference is that the room for error in negotiating it further up is fatal.

If you want to do it, I've said before that I've been skydiving and the adrenaline rush you get from this run is more than skydiving. You'll be fine, BUT.... make sure EVERY part of your Explorer is in tiptop shape. You have an advantage since you have a new lease vehicle in good condition. You don't want brakes or center pin bolts or other items going south on you while up there. And don't do what I did and go up while it is sprinkling.

Find someone to go with you so when you make that turn up top you have a second set of eyes to let you know how far you can back up during your multi-point turn. Doing that "blind" is no fun.

And I'll agree with HIX while disagreeing with him. It is true that Potato Salad Hill is much more dangerous from the standpoint that screwing up and rolling over is definately more likely on it. Anyone trying it needs to realize a rollover is very possible. But you'll survive a rollover on PSH. The outcome is debatable if you do it on Lion's Back.

Up on top of Lion's Back is a "hot tub" hole right in the middle that you will have to circle around if you go up that far (most people turn before then after that first smaller hot tub dip that Matt was talking about). It's scary enough staying in the middle without having to veer off. My tires were ON THE EDGE of a several-hundred foot dropoff going around that hole. A more built rig might chance going into it. It had water in it when I was up there and I was alone and did not like the idea of getting stuck in it, so I went around it.

Well Matt, I'm happy that people can offer to help keep you in the tire tracks. My problem was that no one would ride with me to help. While going up, I couldn't see a d@m# thing because it was like being on a roller coaster when the chain catches you and you sit back in the seat and are raised up loooking into nothing but sky. It's easy for those who haven't been there to say "just follow the tire tracks" but I couldn't see them. I was sitting in my Explorer at a severe positive angle looking up to nothing but sky, knowing that to veer a few degrees or so either way would kill me. Or that any mechanical breakdown that I had no control over would do the same. And ask those who were there about what you cannot plan on..... it started raining while I was up there. I did Lion's Back wet. Who's next?

That is one adventure I'll not repeat this year. I did it, got the t-shirt, and won't do it again. Game over.

Ray Hutchison wanted to run Lion's Back right after me but his wife Debby talked him out of it. The very next run, they promptly sheared their centerbolt on their left rear leafspring and the axle careened back into the rear bumper. If Ray had run Lion's Back he'd be dead now.

This is an obstacle that can be conquered by any of our Explorers. It is a technically simple run that any stocker can do provided the driver can negotiate precise maneuvers. The Moab slickrock traction makes it possible for any of us to do it. What makes it world-famous is the fact that the slightest mistake doesn't result in body damage on the vehicle, but death to the driver.

I don't think it is worth betting my life again to run that obstacle simply for bragging rights. Instead I'm gonna enjoy my time with my son Exploring the rest of southeastern Utah this year.

wait, you get a tshirt? ha ha jp
thanks for all the info guys, i dont think im to interested in it now, the thing that really interested me was knowing that stockers could do ti too
adam
Happy wheelin,
and can someone please tell me how to make my signature website a frickin hyperlink!!!!!!
ive tryed asking so many times and ive not got a response

does it work now? lets see

you forgot your brackets around the first URL.

BTW, Gerald, you make Lion's Back sound a hell of a lot scarier than I remember it being

I did it alone and got caught on top in sudden rain with very strong winds.

Do it blind up there while buffeting winds rock you on wet surface with no spotter to help you, and then let me know how easy you think it was.

I can definately imagine how that would make quite a difference. What I meant was that if yours was the first account of it that I had read before, you'd be hard pressed to drag me up there. :)
