modified stock intake

What about "T" time??

Excellent points, all! Assuming the stock piece is ribbed for no other reason than strength, what about making a PVC setup in the shape of a "T", one going east, one west, with air filts on both ends? Would this be redundant or *****en? Ooooh, this could be fun!

Look under the truck on the air filter side. The air intake goes down, then at the bottom there is a branch that runs over to the exhaust manifold, and a branch that runs up to the grill. At the point where the two branches come together there is a vacuum operated motor that opens and closes the baffle. The vacuum motor is controlled by a bi-metal tempurature sensor inside the air box.

Let me know how the air box drilling mod goes, I still plan to do this myself, just haven't got around to it yet.

Look under the truck on the air filter side. The intake goes down and there is a branch that goes to the exhaust manifold, and a branch that goes up to the grill. Where the two come together is where the duct is, which is controlled by a vacuum motor that is actuated by a temperature switch in the air filter box (thats what those vacuum lines on the air filter go to). If the flap gets stuck or doesn't function properly(like things do when they get old) you suck hot air all the time. I plan to pull the flap out, and re-route the hot air tube forward to the grill.

Let me know how the air box mod goes, mileage/performance gains etc. I still plan to do that myself, just haven't got to it yet.

fender well intake

That black tube that you talk of running from the air box to the front grill can be unbolted and pulled down under the batery tray and a little toward the passenger side dont worry there is a section of flex tubing in the middle so its fairly easy just zip tie it in place using the mounting hole provioded
 






That sounds about right, the ripples might be there to slow down the air going into the MAS, but there are ripples afer it too. I would like to hear the real reason for this...or is it just to make sure the tubes fit right from the factory? :o)
 






Modified air intake

I went to Home Depot today and bought a few supplies and tried Clarks idea about running PVC pipe from the MAS to the throttle body. I fits nicely, and there is a definite boost in performance. I will have pics of it within the next day or so, and so far it seems to be doing better than ever!

After driving with the PVC mod for a few days, is it a worthwhile dramatic difference. What did you use as gaskets between the PVC and the MAS and between the PVC and the throttle body. Did you use angled extentions to make the turns? I would like to know exactly how you did it and see the pictures if you get them. I was looking at mine today and looks like it would fit very nicely.

Very cool pictures, would it be possbile to get a large view of the picture for better detail? its would also be very helpful to add a parts list so anyone can go to the hardware store knowing exactly what to get. What was the difficulty of this project easy, moderate, difficult? I am a relatively begineer with my 91 sport explorer, so I just want to see. Thanks!
 






Where do you make these holes??

Why is there a PVC replacement, is this to get rid of the ribs in the stock tube. or does it serve another purpose?

I want some better gas mileage and acceleration!! I bought the K&N for my '92, can't tell a thing (yes I reset the comp).
 






Sorry for taking so long to reply, I could not get to the message board for some reason! The gas mileage has been improved so far by a mile a gallon. What I used is as follows: from the MAS, a 3" to 2" rubber coupler, a 22 and a half degree angled PVC joint, 2" PVC pipe (will measure exact length and post it later) and a 90 degree 2" rubber elobdw connecting to the throttle body. I used an air fitting to join the oil hose to the coupler and merely drilled a small hole to push the air fitting in. Then used some spray paint to touch it up, and my Dremel tool to give it identification! I am probably going to change, or at least try to change, the pipe to some 3" CPVC pipe, which is used for hot water.

Is that a KKM intake there?

Have you noticed any difference with your new air tube?

Also you might consider insulating the air tube to keep the air as cool as possible when it's in the tube.
 






Yep, thats a KKM. And actually it seems like I have gained an extra mile per gallon, but I am going to run another tank of fuel and double check it. And insulating it seems like a future project....

here is a place that won't do you wrong...and they have a neat little product called "Cool Tape" that is perfect for putting around that gray PVC tube. (although you would cover your dremel job).

...on the right side of their page, the dark blue area, they have listings of products...scroll down to 'Cooling Systems' and select 'DEI'...this is "Design Engineering" the company that makes cool tape...and you will see the products they sell...cool tape is on the page.

Also another thing you might look into is building a custom airbox around your KKM. I have done some measuring with a thermistor of underhood temps and I tested the exact area where your kkm is located, and it got as high as 140 degF in there when the outside air temp was 85 degF. Up towards the front near your (optima?) yellow top battery the air was about 125 degF, not as hot. Anyway I was thinking that those of you with KKMs could build a box around your kkm, insulate it with cool tape, and fab a cold air tube from the end of the airbox to the outside, like a flex tube. I have thought of doing this myself, either with a KKM, or with a Mustang 5.0 K&N conical filter.

Cool tape is supposed to really help with throttle response according to others here in the past..maybe with your KKM and smooth pipe you will see some further gains. I am about to order some cool tape myself after doing my underhood air temp tests the other day.
 






Suggestion: I would recommend Thermal wrapping the PVC with either a Header style thermal wrap , or to save money, a foil wrap from your local hardware store . This will greatly reduce the air temp before entering the motor . PVC tends to hold heat . Hope this helps .

Thanks for the web site! I am seriously going to get some of that tape! And I can see that I will be spending a lot of time on that site seeing what all they have.Thanks again! And I ran another tank of fuel and there is definite gas mileage improvement. So far I have gained one more mpg, but we will see what it is like after wrapping a little of that tape around the tube.
