modified stock intake

Wrapping just the tube may not do the trick...I would look into getting cold air to that KKM somehow. If the air is hot going into the KKM, it won't get cooler inside the pipe, wrapped or not.

here is a pic of my intake tube that i have recently created.

i decided to make the bulk of the tube 3" dia. in hopes that it pulls the turbulance away from the mass air sensor so its more accurate. well im going to put it on wed. ive already tested it out before i painted it and the engine seems to rev faster. well ill see how well it works during driving.

Fordcrazy, that's tight!! Let us know how it performs, if you see an improvement, could you throw us some specs/measurements on what we should buy?

If you see an improvement, I will do that same thing you did. Good job.

Outstanding work guys! Gives me great ideas too. I've been planning forever to do this but other projects and work always gets in the way. Thanks for the great pics. I'm ordering the KKM and tape today. I'll try to get some pics when I'm through also. Take it easy.

well i put it on yesterday and it looks sweet. the fit is kind of a pain since i have the factory air box but i plan on doing somthing about that soon( not kkm but better) the performance is defignately improved...idols smoother, smoother acceleration, and hopefully better gas mileage. well like any first attempt i have room for improvements and there will defignately be some. anyway im going to relocate my batt. to give me more room to do this stuff any suggestions on where it should go besides the cargo area (allready have enough crap back there)

relocating battery

In the past one member relocated the battery to the driver's side (this is on a 91-94 Explorer). You can take the plastic radiator and washer fluid container out, cut it in half. Keep the half that holds the radiator overflow there, but remove the half for washer fluid. Put your battery over there in the new space. You might have to fab a bracket to hold it in place.

If you want washer fluid, go to a junkyard and find a small size container. Look in some older GM cars they seem to have small washer fluid reservoirs. Anyway relocate that reservoir to around the master cylinder area towards the back. That's what was done but I can't remember who did it; I think they were running dual batteries, so they could jumpstart themselves if one went dead.

I've drilled a few holes in my air box, havnt noticed much. I want a powerful sound from my engine... psuedo power.. haha. Any cheap ways i can do that? im going to drill more holes in the box, but i want a power sound. And any way to boost my crap MPG

more air

I completely removed the top half of the air box. I used a rotary tool and I know I get better gas milage and a little more sound from the under the hood.

lol ya can bolt on a exhaust amp asians here put em on thier mitubishis or itsafishy's with thier bright yellow door handels and mud flaps

just a quick thought... well, i heard, not necesarily beleive, or disbeliever, that if the air is swirling or whatever when it goes into the TB, it mixes with the gas better, and u get better performance and/or gas milage.... and well, you guys were talkin' 'bout makin a new intake tube, well, what if u purchased a section of hose, that is similar to oh, lets say a shop vacume cleaner.... with the wire in it.... only bigger around... what would "swirl"the air, and remain round all the way to the TB... just a thought. or, i took a look at our '92 5.0 ford truck, and it just has 2 rubber tubes goin to the airbox....y couldn't u just get a rubber tube that size, and use that instead of the pvc....?

peace

just a thought

94billybad

Not for nothing, but I'll leave those heavy thoughts to the engineers. If it was that simple, I am sure an aftermarket manufacture would have come up with something already. From what I understand, the goal of products like a K&N filter is to "straighten" the air going into the engine so it flows eavenly and not in a random swirling pattern. I myself undoubtingly know less than others associated with this site, and quite frankly have trusted the others with thier past experiences. I have a 97 XLT with a 100,000 miles on it, and it runs better than the first day I got it.

thanx for the reply, well, that is why i thought that if it is better for un obstructed air to enter the TB, then maybe if a person took a rubber hose, such as the ones that came on the `92 5.0 f-150's. i think i will call the salvage yard tonight and see if they have one... if they have one, i will see if i can purchase it and install it on my EX and post if it made any diffferences or not. thanx again for the reply.

If u put a ranger style grill on the first generation explorer, u can utilize the hole on the passenger side as a ram air type intake. I m in the process of building my intake setup but college is taking all my time so it won't be complete for another month when i have free time again.

what year ranger? will it look good?

I believe its 88 -92 the grills are siimilar but the ford symbol is dead center and its open end to end rather than closed on either side
this is what they look like Dead Link Removed
id suggest painting the areas behind the grill on either side of the radiator black for a better look

well, i called the salvage yard, and they didn't have one :( (i might have to rob one off of my dad's truck if he isn't gunna drive it for a few days:p :D ) although, i did stop at Runnings fleet and farm today to look for a chunk of hose, and all i found that might be able to work, is an 2.5 inch inner diameter flexible tube, i think it was aluminum?? not sure on that, but it did have minor ripples where the sections meet, but overall, smooth. i dunno if that would work, what do u all think? would it be work the ten bucks for like 5 feet of it? i think i would only need about 2.5, but it isn't sold by the foot :( well, gotta head for practice...tell me whatcha guys think. peace!

hey guys if you go to www.ifab.net they have intakes for 91-94 explorers and a whole bunch of other intakes
the only thing is, the shipping is super slow 1 month to 2
