I have an 01 explorer with 40,000 miles. I want to mod it to make it last longer. I was thinking, Oil cooler, tranny cooler, maybee a bigger oil pan and trans pan. Trans filter. Brown wire mod to cut down on x-fer case abuse. I know there is more stuff. I kind want to stay away from synthetics. What else will help my explorer last longer, besides not beating on it. Right now I have stock sized BFGoodrich A/T and that is the only mod.

I like those ideas and I am thinking along similar lines. You might think about adding an aux trans filter and temp guage into the system too. I am looking toward the B & M ones from summit.

You are ahead of me just in terms of mileage. I drive mine constantly. Since Jan 8 (purchase date) I have driven over 4,200 miles. I am betting mine will be worn out and in a salvage yard long before yours is.

Probably the best thing to start with and would probably have the most effect is synthetic oils. Why do you want to stay away from them.

How are you liking your 4.10s w/ trac-lok. Mine is a daily driver and will never see a lift or oversize tires, but I am still gears.

I like them, so far. I haven't had it long. Between the rear end and the control-trac (no BW mod yet) I can't spin the tires. If one does slip, even the least little bit, the others grab. They are factory gears and my tire size is the factory 255/70/R16s.

No lifts for me either, but they are very expensive for the IFS.

I want to stay away because of exspense, however if i do use them which ones are the best, I assume I will need oil, trans fluid, xfer case fluid, and rear gear fluid.

Mobil 1 is probably the most resonable as far as price. Royal purple and amsoil are more expensive. I have not used synthetics yet. My old ranger is too worn out to worry about it.

All the mods you want to do will cost a whole lot more than switching to synthetics like the new Mobil 1. Also, the switch to synthetics combined with proper maintenance will probably be more effective in making your EX last longer than the mods you mentioned.

I don't understand why you want to avoid synthetic oils if you want longevity. The switch to synthetics would be my first move.

The installation of a bypass oil filter system is also a wise move.

An ATF cooler as well as an external filter are prudent mods.

Synthetic fluids, tranny cooler, good quality filters, brown wire mod and regular maintenance.

Like Al said, why would you want to avoid synthetics? They are well proven to extend the life of components.

BTW, I run synthetics, a tranny cooler and have the brown wire mod on my truck.

So how does this sound:
Sythetics--Trany,x-fer,oil,rear grear
Oil cooler
tranny cooler
tranny filter+temp gauge
Brown Wire MOD
What do you think about aftmkt trans\oil pans?

Do they make aftermarket trans pans for ours? Hmm....I didn't see any when I looked. I was thinking I would just put a drain plug in the factory one like I did the C5.

Why do you want an aftermarket pan for the oil?

I can see reasons for an aftermarket pan for the tranny; more capacity, finned for better cooling, a place for a tranny temp sender. I am not aware of any though.

Ok, thanks aldive. I didn't find any transmission pans when I searched the net either. Usually, if there is a part out there I can find it somewhere.

More fluid capacity, finned (cooling), magnetic drain plug, temp sending unit. All in one pan would be good. :D

You can go longer in between oil changes with synthetic oil. In a lot of cases it probably works out to about the same price as dino oil. The cost about twice as much but you only need to change them half as much.

So do we all agree on:
Sythetics--Trany,x-fer,oil,rear grear
Oil cooler
tranny cooler
tranny filter+temp gauge
Brown Wire MOD

IS there anything else I should do?

The pan linked to here is a good idea but it says for 4X2s only and on some 4.0 engines its hits the exhaust (cats or resonators).

It won't help most of us at all.

Sorry I'll pay mor attention next time.
