Mods To Make My 01 Last Longer

The pan linked to here is a good idea but it says for 4X2s only and on some 4.0 engines its hits the exhaust (cats or resonators).

It won't help most of us at all.
On the main site they also offer a 4x4 pan, 3 QTs over oem, I just ordered one for my 4X2.
In talking with the tech guy, was interesting to find out that the 4X4 tranny filter is differant than the 4X2 filter, the 4X4 filter has an extended tube that go's into a sump the OEM pans have that the 4X2 do's not.
He said to take full advantage of the extra capacity to use the 4X4 filter in my 4X2 Application

they make it for 4x4's too, it's on ebay. But at $165 a rather expensive mod. Not much point unless you're doing serious 4 wheelin.

That could very well be but I do believe that with 30% more fluid capacity and the finned aluminum design it can't help but lower tranny temps, And perhaps prolong the life of a trouble prone expensive item.

Oh cool. Drain plug (magnetic) and a boss for the temp sensor. I like it. I have been looking for one since I bought my x. Not that I could afford it yet, but Its nice to know it exists.

Spindlecone: When you get yours in, let me know about the quality and the fit. Thanks.

:D Hey Brown, I guess you're a Penn Stater too?? :D

Yes, YES I AM.

Two questions. 1. How did Jdraper know where you went to schooL? 2. What campus and for what degrees? I have a friend who attends one of them.

You may run into a problem, but you shouldn't. If anything, it'll be the shield. I did a filter service to mine at work today with a 5R55E and the shield was the only thing that could be in the way. Hope that helps.

They have a 4X4 version which spindlecone ordered. I talked to the guy as well (very helpful). I have not been under mine yet, so your information is helpful too.

I am waiting to see how spindlecone's turns out, but I am pretty sure it will be ordered for mine soon.

Thanks guys,

Hmmm, lessee..his screen name is Brownpsu78 and his signature says "I bleed BLUE". Now, anyone that went to Penn State knows that all alumni bleed Blue...it's part of the tradition.

As for what campus and what degree, I went to Main (State College, PA) and have two Bachelor degrees, one in Aerospace Engineering and one in Physics. :D

P. S. notice I always post in blue

I didn't even notice the psu. DUH! I am blind. One of Marti's E-mail addresses is at psu.edu. Different campus then, different degree.

Would you believe I have a Blue t-shirt and cap from PSU?

Actually the Bleed blue thing was a blue oval referance, but I am at the main campus in the buisness school.

If you're on main campus right now, you're only about 30 miles from me...I live just down rt 322 from PSU.

back to your mods quickly - why not just:

1. change to synthetic fluids
2. install bypass filters for (i) oil, (ii) transmission and (iii) fuel - there are a number of great bypass filters (motor guard, frantz, amsoil to name a few) - see www.bobistheoilguy.com for further information on oils, additives and bypass filters

bypass filters without a doubt will provide more protection than any of your suggested mods including expanding the oil and tranny fluid capacity. price for each bypass system (would have to buy three) could be steep - up to $200 for each one, but well worth the price if your intention is to provide the best protection for your car.
