Have you guys (and gals) noticed that our moonroofs open twice? If you hit the button, the roof slides open as expected. Then, if you hit it again, it opens another 3-4 inches. Why?

I don't have my ex yet, but I ordered the dual moonroof... question, Do both panels open?

Alot of vehicles do that, I think I remember reading that the "1st" open is to save on wind noise, and the "2nd" setting (All the way) is alot noisier, and breezy.

I know that my Escape did that, haven't noticed it on the X. It made a noticible difference in "comfort level" in the Escape. When opened all the way you would get a lot of buffeting noise.

@jedimike, the glass only opens on the front panel.

I looked into this and found the answer in the Owner’s Guide 3rd Printing:

“To open the sunscreen: Press and release the control. The sunscreen will automatically open.
Note: For the dual panel moon roof, the sunscreen stops at the first panel. Press and release again to continue to open the sunscreen past the second panel.
To close the sunscreen: Pull down the control and release. The sunscreen will automatically close. If the moon roof is open, it will automatically close prior to closing the sunscreen.”

In case you didn’t know, the Owner’s Guide can also be downloaded/printed for free at www.FordOwner.com > Vehicle Basics > Owner’s Manual and Videos > and selecting 2011 Explorer from the drop down menus!

Drop me a line if you have any other questions!

I think you are referring to the "Sunscreen" which is covering the glass so no light gets in. The glass part or moonroof will only open in the first panel. The second row glass will not open.

Yup, tried it yesterday and it does the 2nd open of a few inches. Doesn't make a lot of difference in the X like it did in my Escape. Maybe the wind screen in front handles the air better than the one in the Escape did. The Escape got a very loud "womp womp womp" buffeting sound when opened to the 2nd position. It doesn't say anything about it in the X manual, but I remember it did in the Escape manual, referring to the first stop as something like the comfort position.
