more cheap thrills....

true... but you DO get more hp, due to the fact that you are now running at wide open throttle, and before you were not. well, if it stretched, then you're getting hp back that you lost when it stretched... if FoMoCo made it that way, then you are getting "new" hp that you could not get to before.:D

eh its all how you look at it. you're not gaining hp really... you just get to use what you already had. At the same time you can consider that getting more hp, even though what you modified didn't make that horse power. this is why it confuses so many people.

i like liquids idea of not folding it over just adding more zipties at the end of the spring, thanks cus the whole folding over thing was a pain

whatever works, my cable had a lot of slack, the slack isnt there now, so i have less play in my throttle cable, it just FEELS better, i dont have a weird push anymore, just put my foot down, hard to explain, but im like the 5 cent mods :)

no slack in my 98

I looked and found there is no slack on my 98 limited. I was looking forward to it - but none there.

There might be like 1/4 inch of slack but that is all and not enough to work with - my throttle opens all the way as ar as I can see.

1/4 inch is what i had.. you don't need any to work with... get like a small piece of metal clamp with the inside as big as your throttle cable, cut it to about 1/4. push UP on your gas pedal really hard, and pull a lil on your throttle cable, then slip that sucker onto your cable and clamp it with some plyers. it will make a different even if there isn't much slack :)

Hey everyone, the slack is there for one reason and one reason only. Ease of manufacture. Ford needed a standard length cable that will fit any Explorer without the need for hand tuning each cable to each vehicle. That is why the slack is there. That is also why some vehicles have more slack than others - not because the cable stretched. I was able to take up about a quarter inch of slack in mine with a trusty zip-tie. That wierd feeling of taking up slack when pressing the gas is now gone.

If anyone hasn't done the mod I would reccomend doing it, I am quite impressed with the difference and its a quick little thing to do.

If anyone needs clearing up of the process check out the quick guide I put together.

That link doesnt work for me...

DOH, sorry fixed it, I think

I have a 98 5.0, are you telling me that it has no kick down cable?? If it does, where is it at?

If it's an auto it has a kick down cable, however the 5.0L's kick down attaches to the throttle body, not the gas pedal

Ok is this possible in a 2002? I looked at it (it was dark outside n i juss used my cell phone lgiht cause i didnt have a flash light n i wsa bored) there is slack, but I don't see how in the hell you got 1/4 in of slack on a zip tie, the cable sticks out when i lift it up but its like the knot at the end of it isn't big enough to tighten a zip tie around it is there anything else to use i'm gonna look at it tomorrow in the light though.

by the way, NICE GUIDE !

on forgot to add, its like on your guys' models you have a big tip at the end of the cable mines like tied into a knot n theres only one, not two

I am pretty sure the newer models are all computer controled, not 100% positive on that but Im pretty sure.

wouldn't it be easiest to just crimp on some lead fishing weights to the cable?

you are correct, that is by far the best way to do it. i went back and cut off my zip ties, and re-did it with this method.

damn, i am new here...i thought that the fishing weights might have been my original idea. oh well...ideas, it doesn't matter whose they are as long as they are good.
