Having read all of the clay bar instructions in past threads, I have some more questions about how to do this. When I did my hood, I used excessive amounts of detailer- how wet is the surface supposed to be? Also, I'm using this method to eliminate some overspray on my vehicle after I had it repaired, will this work? It didn't seem like the clay bar removed any of it, I must be doing this wrong. Oh yeah, BTW- I'm using the mother's clay bar...just FYI.
Thanks
Greg

alot of detailer is good. if you dont use enough you will know it cuz it wont slide. i dont think it will take out overspray. but you basically are doing it right just spray ang go with the bar. make sure you wax afterwards.

You could always do a little wetsanding with some 2000 grit wet sand paper, that will take out most overspray.

Be very careful with wetsanding so you don't remove too much clearcoat. The right way to wetsand involves the use of an electronic paint thickness gauge to measure how much clear you can safely remove. Anyway, I have never used the Mother's bar, but I have heard that it is supposed to be good. I prefer the blue Clay Magic bar myself. The clay should remove the overspray, it just might take a few passes. I have also found that the best way to clay is when washing: wash the panel, rinse, then soap it up again and clay. That way you don't worry about running out of quick detailer.

Wet sanding would definitely do it, I just don't trust myself- especially on a new paint job;) . Thanks though. This whole situation really sucks, I had my car custom painted ($3000) and then some dumbass side swipes me after running a red light, then the repair shop screwed up my brilliant gloss with some clear coat overspray:mad: :mad:
Mike- I hope you're right about the clay bar taking it off, I think you're right about the multi passes, two definitely didn't do it but a couple more just might.
Redrig- So I'm doing it right? Whew! I was actually kinda worried about screwing up my paint, it just didn't feel like I was taking anything off with that much detailer on- it does feel ultra smooth in the glossy areas!
Thanks guys, anymore suggestions on how to resolve this? I really don't want to have to take it back to the shop, I really need my car right now.

as far as clay lubricants i stopped wasting the money and i just use water. if you are using the lubricant, just use enough to keep it sliding. if you use it more, ok, no harm done, youre just wasting product. as far as wet sanding goes i would try the claybar first.

:FYI:

Claybar = 3000grit
Compound = 2000grit

I have taken overy spray off of my car with claybar with no sweat. remember, it's not how hard or how fast you rub with clay, its how many times.

here's clay trick...

if you smoke (which you know you shouldn't) take the plastic wrapper from the box, stick your finger in it and with that finger rub the surface of your paint. don't worry, it wont harm the finish. if there are any impurities in the paint you will hear the plastic make a crinkly sound. keep ruubing with the clay, make a another pass with the wrapper and if it's silent, you're done. move on to the next section..

i hope this helps.

J;)

Hey thanks for the advice, oddly enough I got so sick of the dull finish I did just that today on my hood. I clayed the hood probably close to 10 times and used meguairs deep crystal polish about 5 times after claying. After all of that I put on Gold Class wax and that hood is far richer, deeper and more reflective than I've ever seen. Keep in mind that this is a relatively new paint job so the more I wax...the more I like it!:D
You're absolutely right about just using water, that damn cinnamon-smelling detail crap was starting to irritate me.
Greg
BTW- That meguairs deep crystal polish is down right incredible stuff!!!!!
