I want some more power out of my 94xlt. beter gas mileage is always nice also. I have 33's with stock gears so the 4.56's will be next but I would love some better engine performance. I'm not going to lie...I know little about engines but would love to learn. so what could I do for some power? thanks in advance

the best power i have done yet is to take the muffler and cat off and put in a flowmaster. that with the open air intake filter gave me a big seat of the pants boost....

yep kkm and flowmaster:D :D
cant go wrong with those

then you can go with tb spacer (dont know if those do anything) change spark plugs an wires, headers and y-pipe, then there is always nitrous, and the most important thing to get if you want more power are stickers. and lots of them

get yourself a nice air filter for starters. After that, mods are sort of hit-or-miss. New plugs and wires usually spruce up performance and mileage if it's been a while, and good lubrication is always a bonus- look into high-end trans fluid, Differential lube, and engine oil (I hear good things about royal purple, but haven't tried myself).
Finally, a lot of our members here have done a lot of good work in finding what does/doesn't work. Best of luck to you!

get a 66mm bbk throttle body, that worked great for me

those are all good suggestions. if you havent already, do a basic tune up. (wires, plugs, all filters, tranny flush, engine oil)

but it sounds like your gear change is gonna do the most for you.

HAHAHA :bsnicker: LMAO

My racing stripes added 23 HP, at the wheels, not the crank!

But, seriously, how far do you want to take it? There are tons of bolt on mods, most of which were already mentioned: cone filter, big MAF, big TB, headers, exhaust, computer chip, ignition, spark wires, ect.
Or you could get really into it. You can bore and stroke the motor, put in a new cam shaft, add a super charger or turbo charger, or even give it a shot of nos.
Or just do a 5.0 swap.

But like Happy said, the gear swap is going to make a HUGE difference, almost more then all this other stuff combined. Do the gears first, then tweak the motor (I wish I had originally gone this rout). I did just order my gears though [yay].

i have a Cone filter, 5.0 MAF (70mm), stock air tube(seems to give more power then PVC intake) cut off muffler after cats. there are a couple little things like shortening the throttle cable and ajusting the TPS you can to also. 5-10 more horses maybe. it sounds pritty beasty at an idle and like a monster at WOT

Really with 33's nothing will get you back power then a re-gear. After you re gear you'll see your power come back. After that then you can do an intake & muffler setup & a 66mmTB. That will get you a few HP more over all, but still with 33's your not going to fly. The biggest increase you will see are the gears.

with 33's..wut gearing should he go with?...is he right with 4.56 kuz im puttin on some 33s soon and hav been trying to make sure i make the right choice with gearing and tires..i want 33s and depending on how it drives and how big it is..i ben lookin into body lifts as well..i may go to 35s..i hav stock gears and its terrible with my 31s..s i guess with 33s..and 45s possibly in mind..wut gearing should i be looking at i do a lot of city and backroad driving..but im on the highway a few times a week. 65+ mph..

thank you

thats awesome..thanks a lot..wher abouts you think i'd be with the 33s? would it be better or worse at those rpms? and i keep hearing my torque would be great, and city would improve a bit but mpg ont he highway will suck and ill tach out really early..

froader how u doctor ur photo ??

heheh first gen with a working fuel gauge u must suspect him j-k :)

thanks for all the good suggestions. I want to do the gears soon. How difficult is it to install them. I have messed around with differentials a bi, but don't have any special tools. Think I could do the gear swap my own. Any suggestions.

doing gears is do-able but if youve never set gears up before it would probably be a good idea to have someone there with you who knows what they are doing.....theres great write ups all over the net and a good one on pirate4x4....

or if you dont want to mess with gears go get a rear end off a newer EX with 4.10 gears (D2 axel code?) and you could get disc brakes from it too and then regear, maybe you'll have learned more about setting up gears by then and you could do it yourself...

i have 31's and just swapped over to the newer rear end....gears make a big difference...i was amazed went from 3.27's with 31's to 4.10 WOW!! now its a joy to drive my truck haha

Thank you...so do I need any special tools to do the gear swap or is it mostly trial and error. I found some really goo right ups on doing this. And will I have to grind part of the case to fit the 4.56 gears in the rear.

Getting air in and out is the most important part of all for power.
An Air intake kit and exhaust system well work well, power incressing by 30 horsepower at the most.

105mph on 38s you are one crazy sob

I would have to say a underdrive pulley would be the best bang for the buck. Do a search and go to the need for speed forum, it is a very good/worthwhile upgrade. I feel better than any catback or intake if you were comparing against the catback or intake(initially). Check out a thread that I started for a group buy. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=175128

My second recommendation would be a chip. Contact me I can help!-James
