Is there any way to add more towing capacity to a 99 Explorer sport 5-speed, i have a k&N air filter which helps with acceleration and MPG, but what is there to do for towing?
Depending on your gearing go to 4.10s, a four door leaf pack to get rid of your mono springs, a good brake controller, a good quality hitch with weight distribution set up. Make sure your clutch is good and don't over work it, possibly upgrade your brakes. That should get you started on some things to think about.
I think the biggest issue is the transmission / clutch, they are decidedly light duty, some have over used and abused them with good results, others not so much. The mazda 5 speed was not built as a workhorse.
