Over the past couple weeks, I've installed a K&N FIPK, custom cat-back exhaust with 2.5" piping, and I have to say -- the modifications are quite awesome. I have the Diablo chip which I'll install within the next day or so -- I can't wait to be amazed by it.

I've been just driving around, and I now take on those Civics and other so-called vehicles.

I wish i had a mountaineer.. well.. i just wish i had a V8 it would solve alot of my getting burned by ricer issues.. lol
Sounds Phat! post some pictures of your Mount. Would love to see it.!!

be sure to switch to a 180 degree thermostat and premium fuel when you go with the chip. you'll really see a difference with that diablo.

I haven't been beat by too many vehicles

I can easily take neons, hondas, the new liberty by jeep just smoked that guy, ponticrap grandprixs and grandams and sunfires, cavilers, I even smoked a few newer explorers with the same motor as mine 4.0. I did lose to a Mitsubishi twin turbo 300x. I also lost to a dodge stealth. But V6 vans, 4 cly, and even V6 Ponticrap with more horse power than mine stock I eat up and spit out. I eat up Bonnivilles as well. I have very few mods but I have quick get up and go off the line response and pony's to keep up and pass or just pass right off the bat

That's amazing. The Jeep has over 200 HP as well as the Bonneville. The Bonneville is lighter than your explorer by a few hundred pounds. I have driven both and I will tell you that they are as fast as my moms 97 2WD V8 explorer, with the bonneville being faster. I think when you won those races, it was nothing more than an accident unless your truck is heavily modified.

ok ok, heres something i was wondering about just a few mins ago..... Other then exterior apperences... what are the differences between the explorer and mountainer.

RE... basically nothing.... but mountaineers came stock with a 5.0

That's not true. I test drove a 2001 Mounty with the SOHC V6.

That is pretty beat that, that is the only difference.... But what would you rather have? An explorer or mountaineer?

Yea, they are pretty much the same, except obviously the mounty is badged as a Mercury, so it has Mercury badges on the inside, and also has Mountaineer enbossed in the seats, similar to the Eddies...

I am refering to the older bonnevilles

I beat a 94 and 95 Grandprix and Bonniville not the new ones and I dont think this liberty had the 4.0 in it I am not sure because he was admiring my rear bumper and I couldn't tell you what he had in it. I am running the stock tires, I have just over 100,000 miles, I have a KKM, Flowmaster muffler, Bosh +2 sparkplugs and Accell blue racing wires and a transcoolor on my Tranny and that is it.

How much is a 180 degree thermostat and do you think I can get one at AutoZone?

Thanks.

You should be able to pick that thermostat up at Autozone or any autoparts store for around $10.

Happy trails!!

You guys are funny. All this talk about what kind of cars and trucks yourt 4.0L can beat. Where? on the street?

How do you know they are racing you?

the Jeep liberty doesnt come with the inline 6 4.0L, only the new 3.7L V6.

I'm guessing BIGBADFRED has 4.10 gears in his 4.0L X, compared to a 3.27 or 3.55 equipped Explorer that thing is a rocket.

Gears people, dont forget the gears.....I can drop 4.56 in my 4.0L powered BII and then I can take almost anything for a block or two even with 31" tires.........

The Mountanieer in 97 started to come with the SOHC 4.0L stock and the 5.0L was an upgrade.

I tried to race my best friends wife in her 97 Limited Explorer with a SOHC 4.0L and 3.73 gears, stock 28" tires, and I goty smoked. Big time smoked.

I can beat most ricers, and almost every single SUV out there with my 93 OHV 4.0L and a "few" mods. Right now I have 3.73's and 31" tires. Changing the gears made all the difference in the world (3.55 stock), so did the automatic...however how do I know the guy in the Interga is actually trying to race me? Usually you dont.
For all I know they are laughing at 1/2 throttle, just letting me go by. I usually dont even line up to race, I just like to jump off the line so I can get away from the pack, have my choice of lanes, and basically avoid all the other stupid people on the road....sometimes people think I'm trying to race so I will pull next to them and keep ahead of them if I can.....is that a race?

4.10's are a comin......

Now someday maybe I can drop a SOHC 4.0L into my 88 BII, then it would be a real race contender.......that would be funny to toast ALL those ricers in a BII!!!!!!! hehehehehe maybe race for pink slips, oh yeah it's just a 4.0L, hehehehe......

The SOHC is an impressive engine.......

if you want to really add some "race" power to your X go buy a zex nirous kit.. I have one and I race a lot of stuff out there - oh and they try... I hear the little 4 bangers screaming to pull me back - the X is quick but not a real race machine I mean when you get up to 100 MPH you are lucky sometimes not to flip the thing at the slightest tip of the wheel -

Just be careful! I have had an SUV flip by "racing" it - its not fun to mess your car up and almost kill yourself just to say you beat some brat in daddy's civic --- racing is fun just be careful.

mounty, ive got a 97 mountaineer 5.0, and i wanted to know how that diablo chip is working out. ive got my exhaust on my truck and thats it, and ive really been looking into a diablo chip. how much $ was it and where did you order it from? thanks a lot.

TFB,

I got it for 235.00 total. UPS priority overnight shipping cost was included, which was cool -- I ordered it on one day, and got it the next.

I still haven't installed the chip yet -- I keep forgetting to fill my tank with premium gasoline. So once I use up all the gas in my tank right now, I'll install the chip.

I have a K&N FIPK and a custom catback exhaust on my 5.0L so far -- and just those two mods have given me great improvements. I'll put a post up on this forum once I do install the Diablo and do some "testings" with it.

Differences of Mount. and Expl...

The Mountaineer also has a different transfer case. There is no selection of 4H, 4L, 2H. It is an "All-Wheel-Drive"

There is no 4 Low so you may have some troubles with the tranny getting hot when 4-wheelin...

Amongst other things.

A '97-'01 Mountaineer with the SOHC gets the same Control Trac transfer case as a '97-'01 4x4 Explorer with a SOHC or OHV. A 5.0L Mountaineer gets the same AWD transfer case that a 5.0L Explorer gets.
