Yep! Gonna get you those coils as fast as I can.

Have you gotten any farther on the conversion?

how far along are you on this conversion?

I just noticed this thread for the first time and I could lend some help if needed. I have done (4) 2wd to 4x4 conversions in first gen explorers.

92 Navajo Manual 5-speed 2wd to 4x4

92 Explorer xlt Auto 2wd to 4x4 then converted to Manual 5-speed

92 Explorer xlt Auto 2wd to manual 4x4

91 Explorer auto 2wd to auto 4x4

Mr. Q is just taking his time on the transmission part. We are unsure weather he needs to rebuild his A4LD in order to replace his output shaft for a shorter one, or if Ford used the same output shafts on the autos for both 2x4s and 4x4s.

Looks like you have experience with converting 2x4 A4LDs, care to shed any light on the matter?

The output shaft is 100%, different. its shorter and a different spline count. Also 4x4 a4Ld's use a deeper oil pan and different filter.

Yeah, I figured that out after about a month of research. ATM I am saving up for a new tranny, about $700 dollars. Mine in my 2wd has been acting strangely for a few months and I am getting concerned.

You can check on the first page of this thread and I list what I have and what I don't plus how much I have already spent.

I need to update it since I just picked up some manual hubs.

Thanks for checking this out.

Its ok I figured it out the hard way as well. I tryed to do the swap with out removing the transmission, on the 5speed and found out the tail shaft was a different spline count. The sad part of an A4ld is that you have to pull the trans all the way apart to get the output shaft out.

Alright, I am still short of a few parts, but thanks to 91EB I have all the components I need for the T-Case. I still need to pull the driveshafts, rear 3.73 (wanna go discs) and find a decent used 4x4 a4ld with low miles.

Why oh why did I ever start this...what was I thinking?? Oh well, it could have been worse, I might not have had the people on this site givin me a hand, then I would be in some SERIOUS crap.

got the coils yesterday. Nice doin business with you, and if you need anything else you can't find, let me know, the pull-a-part yard here has about 20 4wd 1st Gens.

So when do you plan on installing them?

I would really like some pics when you do!!

lol, it will most likely be when I wear these brand new 31's out or find something else to put them on, so it could be a couple years. I think my truck would look pretty goofy with 31s and 5" of lift.

However, something that did cross my mind is the fact that I have a perfectly good frame and axles set up in my parts truck, and after I pull all the parts I need/want, I can strip the body and make a TTB based explorer "truggy", using those lift parts, a 302 and a zf or M5R2 with a 203/205 doubler.

well looks like I'm going to a 5 speed this weekend. so a have a 4x4 a4ld is you would like it, or i could pull an out put shaft out of my bad trans for you?

Now THAT is a very cool idea!!

I can't imagine the cost of shipping on that...come to think of it...I don't even want to. Thanks for the offer though.

I hear yah. The deal with this is I need ANOTHER transmission. You see my truck gets used a LOT! In about 10 months its accrued over 3500 miles. So I need another tranny to work on while the 4x2 tranny stays in the truck. I am still seriously considering rebuilding one. IF ANYBODY I mean ANYBODY in the Houston area needs to get rid of a busted a4ld, I will personally drive over there and pay in cash. Who knows? Rebuilding a tranny could land me a job somewhere.

Nahhh, thats not a lot of driving.

My dad puts on about 25k mi. on his car a year, and I put on about 14k mi. on my ex a year.

But yes best thing is to have a second transmission to rebuild and take your time when making mistakes. Unless you can figure out a way not to drive for a few weeks:rolleyes:
