My 2001 sport won't fire up. I tried to start it but it only started up for one second..then the next try..it barely fired up..then the next try..it only clicks..it sounds like its trying to start but just doesnt..My dad and me just replaced the fuel filter but no luck! please help!

p.s.
This is the second time this happend..BUT the first time this happend..I held the gas to try to "Warm it up" and after revving it for about a minute..it finally idled...
This time however..it doesnt want to idle if i try to "warm it up" by revving the engine..Any ideas?!!!!!!!

possibly iac, or maf.....

does it consistently crank and not fire? or barely cranks? if it barely cranks, i would look at battery being the culprit...

Sounds like your battery is dying or dead, did you check that? Maybe your alternator died...

I'd take a multi-meter out and see what type of voltage is coming off the battery, then I'd fire up the car and check the alternator the same way.

I wouldn't think it would be anything fuel related, that being the case the car would crank and crank, but nothing would happen whereas here it cranks, dies, cranks, then goes to clicking.. Prob the starter pulling the last bit of life out of the battery.

Sorry if you guys got confused..it cranks and cranks..it just sounds like theres no fuel getting in....

When i crank and hold the gas pedal..it fires up..but as soon as I let off the gas pedal..it dies.

Oh and the battery is fine..i just replaced it recently..

Im curious if its the IAC...How would I know for sure its the IAC?

I'd pull a plug and see if you're getting spark, then I'd check on fuel pressure.. You're not throwing any codes?

Nope, no codes. I'll give it a tune-up and see if it helps. Thanks everyone. I'll keep you posted.

Yes it is most likley the IAC. Had the same problem. Clean or replace the IAC.

Do you know if its geting fuel? There is a fuel shut off valve in the passanger seat or somthing you should check out. Its in the manual i believe. Usually it triggers from shock due to an accident to prevent a fire. Maybe that is it?

do you hear the fuel pump come on when the key is switched to the "on" position?
if not, look into the fuel pump relay, and the intertia switch, before the fuel pump.

Hey guys, thanks for all the ideas..

1. The IAC didnt look very bad..I didnt have any humming/whinning sounds coming out of the engine so I assumed it was the IAC.
2. The fuel pump relay was intact and knew it was working because I can hear the pump create pressure when I turn the car to "on"
3. I didnt think it was the spark plugs because when I would hold the gas pedal while i start...it fires up..so I thought the plugs were good.

So the only thing left that I really thought was the culprit was the fuel filter...

So my dad and me replaced the fuel filter and it took a few starts and revs before it began to consistenly start on its own without pressing the gas pedal. But now we have a little safety problem...

while we were taking off the connectors from the fuel filter..(It was a PITA fby the way)..but we did happen to take off one end...but the other end..got banged up pretty bad in the process so it was leaking fuel big time...SO we got some replacement fuel line hose from Kragen and replaced the part of the hose that connects to the front of the fuel filter..It started fine, and drove fine without any leaks when I took it around the block a few times..

My thing with it is that it doesn't leak..but yet I feel a little skeptical that it will hold onto the filter and not break from the high fuel pressure..

I was wondering if anybody has a rough idea how much it may cost me to get the front part of the fuel line replaced by my local ford service department?

Thanks for everything guys!!

not sure if you are still having problems or if the hose was the problem but i thought i would share my experience. My 01 sport had the same symptoms as yours. i spent time checking everything to no avail. i thought i was the IAC but it checked out fine. so i finally broke down and took it to the ford dealership where they have all the "cool" diagnostics and it turned out to be something like a "DPFE" sensor which works with or controls the IAC. to this day i have no clue what that piece of ingenuity is but the sport works fine now. so i would not rule out the IAC just yet. hope you can get back on the road soon!
