My 4r70w slips. Help.

For anyone else looking

http://www.txchange.com has an AOD-E/r470w rebuild video and book for $40.95. Their rebuild kit is $207.69. I emailed them and asked what was included in the rebuild kit and they said gaskets, seals, sealing rings, o-rings, frictions, steels, pump bushing, filter, and overdrive band.

before you jump at that PM me.

Will do. I called up Midwest Mustang (ped5stang's shop/salvage) and they won't refund me but they will swap the tranny out for another one. I guess I'll pull it this weekend and then go get another.

NOW there's a real straight shootin' outfit. Sell you a trannie with a warranty and after you put it in and discover they sold you a piece of crap they have you remove it and insist you take another gamble with em. I think I'd post something warning others to stay away!!!

And people wonder why I often say a junkyard trannie more often than not was where it belonged to start with.

Yes I think that's pretty shady myself. No where ever did he say in any of his emails to me that the warrantee was exchange only. I checked my receipt and it says nothing of the sort. When I was there in person I asked many times about it and never once did they say they would only exchange it. Had I heard that I would have left.

I paid for a 2000 4r70w with 35k that was supposedly tested and confirmed to be a good working unit. Now I'm supposed to return it and take some other high mileage tranny? That's not what I paid for.

I think I'm going to insist on a refund. I can't just be testing one bad tranny after another, it's to expensive. I have to purchase 14 quarts of Mercon V at $3.85 a quart. A $15 filter, new gaskets for the extension housing which I pull and clean the dirt out of, front input shaft seal, external filter, supplies for flushing. I mean it costs about $100 just to find out I have another bad tranny.

I can't say I was to happy about our phone call either. He made the comment that they only have trannies fail when people don't know how to install them.

Bad Business -stay Away!!!

Show him the pic of the metal in the pan, and tell him you want a full refund. And a note to anyone else thinking of doing biz with these guys (MIDWEST MUSTANG), stay away. I can accept they may not know that a used trannie is bad, but their actions post sale suck. I'd also let the BBB know.

What a JERK.

Might want to hit a couple Mustang websites and post (factually and honestly) what you experienced - no name calling. Save others the trouble of dealing with outfits like that one.

By the way, the intermediate one way clutch is holding in 2nd gear, and overruns in coast in 2nd gear... it is overrunning all the time in 3rd.... so I still am suspecting the direct clutch which first comes into play in 3rd gear. Why the bind up I cannot explain though.

I'm pissed. I hate to see good people jerked around like this. If you want to rebuild I'll make sure you get the best prices and have the parts and tools to do it right, right away.

I emailed him the pictures I posted on this site before I did anything. I had not installed the new filter, added all the fluid or anything. I asked if this is a problem or bad tranny? Should I even bother with it? Could it be bad? His response was (and I cut and paste)

We pull the pan and drain the fluid on every transmission after it has been
tested. It tested perfect in the vehicle.

I then emailed him back with a simpler email asking what about the bronze shavings? Is this not a sign of a tranny that's on its way out? His reply

Yes, to some degree. Everything will fail at some time.

He didn't give me much to go on so I went ahead and tried it out. As you know it doesn't work at all. Just binds up as soon as it shifts to third.

Ok, let me take the gloves off. I didn't rain on your parade once I saw the metal in the pan. I should have. His response it tested perfect in the vehicle is HIGHLY suspect. When you showed him the metal pics, his response "everything fails at some time" is SUCH a cop out. In your case that meant, like NOW!

With this additional information I will openly label him a charlatan. If he knows SHJT about trannies he knew yours was bad. At least once he saw the pix. I sure as hell didn't think it would go 100 miles. I regret not speaking up.

Get your money back. It might be a great rebuilder.... but you paid too much for it as a rebuilder.

Like you say it might be a good rebuilder but I already have one of those laying in my garage. I was supposed to be purchasing a good working tranny to drive with while I rebuild the one laying in my garage.

Ha, you know what I just noticed. That old email I cut and paste above says "It tested perfect in the vehicle". I had forgotten about that. When I spoke to him on the phone today he said it tested on the bench perfectly. It's not even the same story.

I just went out for a test drive. The Baumann controller I'm using has an option to wire into the cruise control and you can manually shift the tranny with the set/acc and cst buttons. It's basically paddle shift or what ever you want to call it. Anyhow I manually shifted it into 1st, 2nd, & 4th while standing still in the driveway and let off the brakes and was able to go forward quite easily. In 3rd though you can feel the resistance right from a stop.
I then went out for a drive and found I could manually shift 1st, 2nd, run it up a little high and then hit the up shift button rapidly twice and it would shift right into 4th and keep going. Not exactly the way anyone wants to drive but I thought you would find that interesting.

Hmmm I will have to factor that in... it does fly in the face of my direct clutch theory.... I'll bow to the folks at Baumann.... maybe they are right. I am hoping we will never know..... but admit my curiosity.... I am justa curious kinda guy I guess, is how I got started on the Auto trannie thing. Fascinating beasts.

So what is your plan now Malcolm?

Currently the plan is to return Ped5stang's tranny under his 90 day warrantee and get my money back. Then I could use my existing slipping tranny, that started this whole thread, as a core to Ford and just get one of their units with a 2 year 24k warrantee.

I didn't know until you posted this that he was a business selling parts on here. In the thread he just says he is parting out a vehicle. Now I know why he wanted so much for a receiver hitch (which I didn't buy). I can get them locally (at salvage yards) for the same price without paying shipping. Hmm...salavage yard price...should have known.

He is not a member nor a sponsor of the site. I wonder what rick thinks about this? Sounds like someone making a good living off of ricks work.

Um excuse me but if the trans pan was dropped properly it would have been cleaned and the filter changed...I DOUBT they would have left any shavings, let alone a damn cricket in there! If they did that on purpose then they should refund ALL customers they ever sold ANYTHING to and be shut down by the BBB!

In that case, why don't you sell me a 5.0 with a bent rod for $1500? Its only failing to "some degree".

As far as Aamco rebuilds go...I had my 4R55E rebuilt by them and I had to go back somewhere around 3 times for the rebuild before they got it right. In my case, it ended up being the 2-3 shifter (whatever that is) but my problem was completely different from yours - a VERY hard up/down shift from 1st to 2nd (2nd to 3rd wasn't the best either) even after the rebuild.

When they finally fixed it all they took care of me. I had the t-case rebuilt too because the clutches were shot. Before and after the rebuild the 4x4 lights flashed 6 times. I had into Aamco a lot for this problem as well. They replaced the speed sensors for free...all 3 of them? They told me there was a 3rd inside the tranny that was actually bad since when they replaced the other 2 the problem still persisted. Anyways, they gave me a 12/12 without paying anything extra initially and i had until my 12/12 was up to purchase a liftime warranty, which I ended up purchasing and can now get my truck rebuilt in like 44 out of 50 states in multiple cities per state. Not at all a bad deal to never have to worry about paying for a rebuild again for 750 bones.

just wondering but what is your Baumann TCS set up (shift points/line pressure curve) and if your looking for a 4r70w you might want to check with Baumann cause they sometimes stock new ford ones for pretty low prices >quote from their web site "# Sold Out 0 302/5.0 bolt pattern 4R70W 4WD $1300.00" but I would call them up and see if they are getting any in, might save ya a few $$ or be about the same $$ as a rebuilt tranny

Savage, I'm running a pre made program from Baumann. If you download their software off their website I'm using the one called 66Stang. This was recommended by them as a good starting point for my setup. I've only done a few miles so I can't comment to much on it but it did seem to suite my setup.

They are indeed out of transmissions just like their web site says. I've called them. It actually wouldn't save me anything after shipping but I tried anyway.

I got another 4r70w from Midwest Mustang today  I'm not exactly holding my breath on it. If it's another POS I'm just going to rebuild. Tired of swapping trannys.

Sounds like making mods to ease removing the trans was a pretty good idea. It's too bad your not using this feature like 100k+ from now. I know you probably weren't expecting to need to remove/reinstall a trans this many times to get a good one.

LOL yeah really. This is now my third salvage yard tranny and it works it will be the first one. If it doesn't work no way am I going back to Midwest Mustang. That guy Terry (ped5stang) is absolutely horrible. Made me wait from 8:15am till 10:00am for him to show up. Kept calling it telling his employees to tell me he'd be there any minute. Finally he shows up and pulls the whole intimidation act cussing up a storm, throwing and slamming stuff. Every second word out his mouth was the F word. Heck I thought he was about to take a swing at me. I had to stand outside his office for about five minutes so he could cool off and we could have a half way civilized conversation. What a horrible experience. I got my replacement tranny and left. How on earth do places like that stay in business?

Anyhow yes the mods worked great. Instead of spending the better part of a week pulling the tranny / motor combo I was able to just remove the exhaust, transfer case, tranny crossmember, unbolt and lower some of the front suspension and crossmember, remove all misc wiring cables etc. and lower tranny, jack up vehicle and remove out the side. I timed it too. Just going along at a casual pace it took about 4 hours. Not exactly earth shattering but much better than it used to be.

Tonight I should get the majority of the installation work done, hopefully finish it up tomorrow and then Thursday night maybe fire it. Maybe not, my 4 year old's sick so I may not be able to get into the garage much in the next few days.

Thanks
Malcolm

Savage Wolf, I was just reading that link you have in your sig which was to your V8 swap. I see you are also using a Baumann controller. What program are you using? How do you like their controller? I think you're the first person I've found besides myself that's using one of their controllers.

We have similar setups. You're using ECC IV as did I (92 Stang) with a Baumann controller.

Thanks
Malcolm
