'98 Ford Ranger 3.0L 4x4
I am sorry if there is an anwer to this already some where. I have been looking for a while and I can't seem to find an answer. Any way my '98 ford ranger 3.0L will not go into 4x4 low. I have seen the threads of other people asking the same question. The answer they get is make sure that you have it in neutral if it's a auto tran. or clutch pressed in on a manual tran., and pressing down on the brake at the same time. Then the person answers back that it is now working. I have the clutch and brake pressed and nothing happens. I took off the shift motor this last weekend and cleaned it and it works fine. Then I put it back on my truck and still nothing. I decided to check my fuses and I found that the clutch postioning sensor fuse is not lighting up my tester. I put in a new fuse and it still didn't light up.It's #24 and is a 7.5amp fuse. I don't know what to do now. My knowledge of electrical problems on trucks is all most zero. It would be really helpful if the answer could be dummy terms.

If you have the shift motor off, switch it into low range (In N or clutch in) and see if the motor moves to the low range position.

Then

try to shift the t case into low by hand (plyers)

If the shift motor does not go into low range then I would suspect your onto something with your clutch pos sensor fuse, although I have never dealt with this sucker, I imagine it has something to do with the 3 way clutch pedal switch on the pedal itself. This sucker is used to shift the 4x4, start the truck, and for the cruise control.

You can check the wiring to your 3 way clutch pedal switch. It is located on the clutch master cylinder plunger, just under your clutch pedal, under the dash.

Do the shift motor check first, see if its trying to rotate to low range.....quick and easy way to point you in the right direction....
