My 96 Explorer has 155,000 miles and I am using it to tow a 6x10 enclosed trailer.
I installed a hitch from E-trailer.com and also had to install the complete light kit with module since I did not have the easy connection to hook up to. Everything went smooth except the hitch hit the rear bumper since someone before me tried towing with the bumper and bent it down slightly. I slotted the bumper to fit the reciever hitch.
I also installed the Monroe rear shocks with helper springs on them. It made the back end sit the way it should giving the truck a slight forward rake. With the trailer hooked up the truck sits level.
On the road the setup worked well. I was able to travel at about 65-70 in overdrive with a little strain on the engine. On the grades it would downshift out of overdrive and hit 3000 rpm at 65-70 to maintain speed up the grades.
There was very little porpoising with the rear helper shocks.
Very impressed with this little trucks ability. Here is a picture of my setup.
The truck is actually unhooked so this is how it sits without the trailer attached.
