My hood scoop write up ( sub titled Rasin Bran )

The scoops were taken from a 1988 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe.
They were pretty old, so I showed them some attention with some body filler and primer.

Step one was to find the center line.
Note it is NOT the same as the seem on the cowel pannel

I reccomed using a sewing tape mesure for this process.

Make many mesurements. The more the marrier

I looked under the hood to find the supports.
I wanted, if possible, to not cut the supports.

Using references from under neath and a boat load of math I was able to lay out the hood.
Again measure as much as you can.
Or as the saying goes.
Measure twice, cut once.

I put a furniture pad under the hood and across the windshield.
3M Spark resistant paper covering the entire hood.
You can see my reference sheet to the left.

I am about to cut. This is the point in time that you should pray.
Even if you are not a religious person I would recomend you pray any way.
You are about to cut gaping holes in a perfectly good hood.

Measure every thing one last time. Use hand and eye / face protection, take a deep breath, pray again, go to the bathroom ( seriously this step took me half an hour )

here are the holes,
now it is just a matter of fine trimming the edges for a fine fit.
This is the tedious part.
The other difficult part here is making sure you DO NOT lean on the hood.
When you are short like me, this can be difficult.

the scoops have a lip that set on the hood.
I lined those edges with tape so I could scuff the hood edge for the adhesive.
First thing though I applied touch up paint to all the bare metal surfaces.

The adhesive I used was Dura-Mix brand large metal panel adhesive.
This stuff has a long work time and is used to glue quarter pannels on cars.

I ran a thin bead on the bottom edges of the scoop ( except the rear )
and lowered them in place.
Then I raised the hood and applied a thick bead to the bottom.

I decided to use aluminium screen to go behind the scoops. I doubled it up and used the same adhesive. I didnt like the open look and I did not want crap getting all over my motor.
I also put some door edge guard on the back edge of the hood for protection.

These scoops are "functional" but they are also pointless.
With the intake so far forward these scoops are just for decoration.

The last step once the adhesive dried ( 24hrs ) I washed the hood and rubed out a few minor scratches, and shined it up with Zaino Z-6.

That is how I did it.

I found it much easier to measure and cut my hood with it off the truck. (otherwise I need a ladder to reach my hood )

Has to be some way to keep water out, I have the EE scoop and am getting ready to make it functional, I do believe it will lower underhood temps alot.
Have not a clue as to how to keep water out, maybe a spring loaded gate of sorts, maybe a way of diverting incoming water, dunno

That would not make any sence, unless you have the ability to switch it your self.

I have had these in for over a month now in far more than my share of down pours. A bit more dirt on the motor ( shudder ) but mechanicaly, not an issue of of yet.

My 72 gran torino sport was just an open scoop. It had a wire mesh in the opening. It was pointed toward the carb (open chrome element) and I never had any water problems. It did allow more dirt to get under the hood, but.....

That looks great MONMIX. Too bad all of us do not work in a body shop.
