My new tube bumper - lots of pics!

I don't argue that stuff made out of DOM is stronger than stuff made out of pipe.

But for bumpers and sliders and such on a daily driver weekend wheeler rig, the difference is going to be un-noticable and unnecessary, and will not justify spending 10-20 times as much on material.

1026 Cold rolled DOM, 1.25"x0.120"x 10 feet.... $45.80 online  and thats not counting shipping and that you cant ups anything over 8 foot

Really... I happen to agree 100% with that, just want to make sure those who dont have metal working backgrounds think that thicker S40 ERW Pipe is going to as strong a 1020/1026 DOM thats a tad thinner (its really a big diffrence) but your S40 Pipe is probably 10-20x stronger then the crap westen or smitty built uses for their bumpers :D
Bang for the $$ cant beat the pipe esp if you know what grades to get and can find it, you can build tube buggys from the stuff, sort of goes along with how I think its great that you guys are using them HF benders and alot out of it for your $$, TBH I wouldnt have gotten my pro-tools bender if I wasnt building up my own shop unlike what someone else said about the bender only being $300.... I wish, the bender is only $300+/- a few bucks, then add dies, stand/mounting the sob or more $$ for hydro, ect and shipping, the dies are really *#$# heavy shipping was killer on my setup (think shipping was almost as much as the darn 1.25 die )
Soon as I get my shop redone (now that i need to make room to mount the friggin tube bender and keep in mind room for the tube to stick out, and not hit walls/doors/the truck/toolboxs and work benches) I'll post a thread with my sliders =) and stop hijacking the hell out of your thread :p

 is right. I can buy Crome-moly for that price.

yeah has me worryed for tomorrow when I'm going to call and get prices on the 4130 DOM... Ya know /hijack off.... going to start a new thread on this lmao...

Savage,

You want to post the web address where your getting the prices for this stuff?

From the place where I get metal, it would have been $145 for 15' (the amount needed for my bumper) of 1.5" 0.120" wall DOM. How could I say no to 20' of 2" pipe (2.375" OD, 0.154" wall) for free?

www.metalexpress.net not the cheapest place to get it, but they happen to have a shop somewhat local to me and they keep metal in stock, other place I'm going to get prices at only sells 20 foot sticks and they order straight from the mill so its 1-3 weeks to get the stuff from them

great job on the fab work...gave me some ideas (thanks)...did you powder coat?

No powder coat. Just cheap crap $0.95 a can walmart spray paint. The stuff works great if you don't mind repainting it every 3 months. I'm not really worried about rust because the pipe is galvanized.

This could end up as a thread hijack - We can talk paint and coatings in another thread if anyone is interested, but my favorite rattle can paint is the Rustoleum Professional line. That stuff is almost as good as real sprayed-on paint. Lots of solids.

nice bumper, u did a great job, and i agree hunting is a good way to make the pop. smaller it is also fun and makes ur weeks grocery bill smaller

are you going to put the lights back on?

hey were did you buy this at ????
bumper005.jpg

And how much?

Harbor Freight Tools. On sale for $69.99. Regularly $99.99 :D

The bumper was the first thing I made on a harbor freight bender. I've since learned how to keep the pipe from flattening like that by packing it with sand.

The hole saws are plenty easy to find. Since pipe is used by plumbers, electricians, who need to run pipe through wood and metal there are plenty of hole saws availible. For instance: 3/4" pipe takes a 1-1/16" hole saw, 1" pipe takes a 1-3/8" hole saw, 1-1/4" pipe takes a 1-3/4" hole saw, 2" pipe takes a 2-1/2" hole saw...etc....but you get the point.

And I would build a roll cage out of it. If you design it right, it will be just as strong as a DOM cage, and only weigh 20 Lbs more. I'd rather have 20 extra pounds of pipe cage than pay $100 more for 20 Lb less DOM cage.

But each to his own. If you want to pay the extra for the $300 bender and pay extra for material, then I'm happy for you.

good idea there champ id rather my cage crumple in around me cause i saved 100 dollars too. i dont care what you say about the strength of your HREW ill pay extra for my dom cause i know it will save my life. also they make TUBE benders for a reason. a PIPE bender is not made to bend things like that. hence the difference.

Many a cage has been built out of pipe and people have survived hard crashes...

Remember, the steel in both pipe and DOM is the same - it is only the dimensions that change, with pipe measured by an external dimension and DOM by an internal. DOM can be HREW depending on the type purchased, but that has already been covered above.

Pipe IS structural, and it is used that way in MANY applications.

As said above - if I can get some good protection from a $69 bender and some pipe, then I'm going to do it. If I'm racing or doing something where the rules stipulate that I use seamless DOM in a high grade steel, then I'll do that, but for trail riding and the general use that most of our trucks see, I see no harm in pipe and I would trust my life to it.

After all, we are NOT talking about some brittle old rusted out water pipes under a mobile home here, we are talking about brand new good steel pipe, which is thicker than DOM and bends as well if not better. I've sure given my stuff a work out and it is holding up very well...

Where do people get the idea that pipe is going to shatter or crumple if it hits rock? I'll bet he's never even made anything out of pipe to know what it's like

But I've had enough of arguing over this stupid debate. Could a mod either

A) delete all the posts concerning the pipe vs. tube debate

OR

B) just close this thread comepletely?

Since it's your thread, you can close it. ;)

LMAO, I just read that. I made my cage out of galvanized structural steel and i was told it wouldnt crush with 5000 pounds placed on it. Yosh dont worry about it, You were correct. I was told by the guy that made my cage that DOM tubing is just normal tubing that is to exact outside diameter. How DOM is stronger i have no clue. Nice bumper man looks great!

Not since I'm just a wannabe

I'm pretty sure it works for everyone. When you edit your post, at the bottom (I think) it says close this thread after you post this.

Here's some pics. The third is my favorite. :D
