Thanks for the reply Rick. I know this is getting off-topic but I feel like this discussion should continue.
800x600 is what works well within the format of any message board.
For embedded images, that can be true but it largely depends on the resolution of the viewers' screen. 1024x768 is long outdated for screen sizes, most screens these days are larger than 720p (1280x720), even on most tablets. 800px wide takes up 2/3 of that width. Then comes in the other factor, the theme of the website and it's margins/padding. There's a pretty hefty left & right margin on this site that cuts into the content. That's not necessarily a negative since content is better viewed vertically but it does otherwise cut into image width.
So... what's the solution? I don't know. Most of my background is with SMF and PHPBB. There's gotta be something in vBulletin to have larger images attached but the preview is a smaller thumbnail. I know I've seen it on vBulletin forums, where you have a yellow bar that you click on and it gives you the full size. I'm not suggesting full size images, that'd kill loading times and eat up so much data. But it would be pretty nice to have the width cut down no lower than 1280.
You are more than welcome to store your photos elsewhere, but our experience is that most people do not maintain their offsite photo albums for very long, and we end up with a lot of threads with dead photo links.
I totally get where you're coming from. I've come across a lot of threads with dead links and pictures. It's no good. Personally, I store things in Dropbox and won't delete them because I know other people may depend on them, even if I get out of the Explorer game.
My whole point about storing them off-site is resolution. 800x600 often doesn't give enough detail. Especially with people taking blurry pictures on cell phones. Uploading scanned documents with text and diagrams may be hard to read when scaled down to 800x600.
If there's a way to allow larger embedded images, automatically scaled down to thumbnails and you allow a larger upload/attach size, I'd happily pay for Elite and add all my images in.
