pisgah trails

BuchvilleMan, I've been trying to find some local stuff mainly around pisgah near Mt Mitchell and Shining Rock but haven't really been to successful. If you have anymore information on some actual trails out here i'd love to hear from you. All i've found yet are alot of gravel roads that follow stream beds and one or two short little obstacles just of the roads. Thanks,

i was staying with my friends in black mountain (they actually live on the same mountain as ridgecrest baptist conventions center (or whatever they call it now).) i took the road that runs parralel with 40, turned left behind ridgecrest headed east into the forest on agravel road. it took a while on some dirt roads until we found a park with a geizer and a stream (some state manged area but i cant for the life of me remember whats its called) it took 20 mins to get to that point but it is really only a few miles due to the windy roads. after you pass that park you enter the forest, which is a nice new black asfalt road. well my best friend and our sons just drove up and down and around when we saw what looked liek a driveway off of the main road. it was gnarley incline and i had to put it into 4wd to get into it. it was a windy clay and rock trail that lead us around this one hill for about 2 miles there were a few dead trees and it looked like nothign but four wheelers had used it. it eventually lead us back to the main road. it was SWEET trail. we only explorered for about 3 hours but it looked like there were plenty of trails with alot of potential. these trails were not official roads and were probably not intended to be driven on but we approached them respectfully.

where do you live at? we vacation in black mountain every year about July.

in VA there are state OHV areas off of the applilation trail and blue ridge parkway. if you get a map/tour guide they have little jeep icons. im not sure in NC has te same maps. my dad and uncles spent alot of time up there when i was kid. the last time i was there was close to 2 years outside of culpepper, there were some nice windy rocky trails, nothing unamanageable. we were near Rose river, but thats VA.

i almost forgot Crabtree medows in VA has some nice roads to explorer that is 4x4 accessible only as you have to cross streams and and a few slender ans steep hills.

In hickory NC i went wheeling on friend's property, also outside of Spruce Pines i have friends with a trout farm and about 20 acres. some of the best wheelin i have ever experienced was there.

sorry im so poor at route names ill look at the map when i get home tonight and try to find out exactly where i was in pisgah.

we should get together next summer if your still up there.

hey -- yeah sorry, i cleared them out now. you are going to be about 30 minutes from me. anderson is cool though. thats where the big 4x4 jambo was a few weeks back. it was awesome, rock crawling course and everything. i was talking to a cop, and from what i understand there may be a legal wheelin trail in anderson, but im not sure. anyways, you can PM me now if you want.

I have heard Tellico is insane. I have wheeled with my buddies at Uwharrie. It was great! We went in two D-90's, one lifted jeep grand cherokee, one lifted blazer and one stock blazer. Everything did really well except for the stock blazer. It demolished it's running boards. There are lots of hard parts, but if you are too scared or your rig can't handle it, there is always an easier path. It is a lot of fun. If I can use a scanner I can upload all of the pics of the uwharrie trip. I will try to do that. It is SWEET!

Anyway if you have any questions jusk ask. I have gone three times, so I am pretty familiar with it.

Later,
Rob

For those of you who aren't aware, I will be moving to Anderson SC in a month to live near my son. I had talked with Rick about the need for a major run in the east while we were discussing how great the trails are in the west, but nothing seems to be that nice out east. I have read about Tellico and figured that must be the spot for a major east run if it were to happen. I had planned to prerun Tellico sometime next spring and try to coordinate a major Explorer run there. Now I see that you guys are already doing all the work!

hey Gerald, ill have to come see your rig when ya move. that will be so nice if we could get a ton of guys at telico or uwharrie for some large X run. theres 2 guys at my school that prob belong to this board. but we really need to put somethin together once Jason gets the website up!!

hey Tarheel,
Do you have any pics of your truck with your mods. I would like to see how the speed grill looks.
Rob

Thanks a bunch. your truck is red right? Yeah I think I am going to buy all new piaa lights this weekend. New superwhites, 40's for the fog light area, and 520's to replace my hellas. So when I do that I will try to take some pics. I have pictures, but I can't get my scanner to work. Oh well. Just have to borrow my friends digital camera. I can't decide whether to buy a billet grill or speed style one. My question is whether the white bars of the grill will be visible behind the speed style grill. And if they are visible if it would look okay. Hopefully seeing yours will answer my question.
Rob

if you look under before & after, there a thread called "home made speed grille" thats what i did, its gutter guard. its behind the bars though. i dont know if thats what your lookin for.

I'd love to see the pics! I love checking out wheelin' pictures, and it would be even better to see some of a trail I could run...

Do you think Uhwarrie holds enough of a challenge for the more hardcore guys? It soulds like something I'd like to check out, maybe not as tough as Tellico. Sounds like we're due for either a Uhwarrie or Tellico run this spring/summer! :D

i vote spring please!! a weekend run or something, b/c my summer is really filled up

yeah same here, summers not really filled up, but i wanna go on a run!! the last week of march is good for me, the whole week. im prob not gonna be real hardcore, i might have to ride with one of you hardcore guys. but i will def go on all the trails up to the lifted truck ones. how is this for a possible date like the MARCH 23-31???:mattmoon:

Anytime

As long as there is some warning I should be able to.. But, you know how the military is right now...

:shoot:

Yeah, there are quite a few realy hardcore areas of Uwharrie, but if you don't want to take them, their are always routes that are easier. So basically if you have a slightly modified / lifted truck you could go on basically all of the trails. But if you want big challenges and don't mind breaking driveshafts, etc, then you can go for it! Whatever you want there is there.

Hope that answers your question BigDerk. I will try to get those pics up soon.

Thanks Rob. What does everyone else think about a Uhwarrie run? It sounds like a good idea, since stockers should be able to handle it b/c of the bypasses and such, I don't think Tellico has that on all the trails but I'm not sure. I also think a spring weekend run would be best.

Anyone in Raleigh

Hey if anyone in the Raleigh area wants to get together this weekend. I will be up there for the gun show. We could get together and do whatever. Lemme know what ya think. I think it would be good to start getting some of us together a lil at a time til we can all get together.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Exactly...Need to form small groups.....If anyone in South Ga would like to join us feel free. Or anyone else for that matter..The problem you run into with larger areas, is planning and scheduling. We plan our events on a every other month basis, because the state is so large. You guys and gals need to get together with outher members from your State..Planning a run for the entire east coast is going to be a big under taking. It is going to require each and every member to do their part.
NOW, please don't pursue this unless you have every entention of making the run.
1st....We need to decide on a place as a group, this place needs to be central as possible..Tn, NC, SC....
2nd...Someone will need to contact the area, find out about lodging, local laws, any fees or permits we will need.
3rd...Set a Date...The date is probally the least important detail, people will make it if they want to come.
From there, we can devide up into groups. Each group can plan THEIR trip, arrange THEIR lodging, and take care of any other problems they may experience.
Now, anyone who is serious about having this LARGE meet, feel free to contact myself or anyone else who is involved with ECX or FLEX.
We have to move on this if we want to do it....I will be sending e-mails to several of you this week and we will see if we can get this thing rolling....

man im ready for some wheelin' soon. lets meet up soon! only problem is i can only drive till 6pm till april, then i can drive till 8, and then in june i can start driving at night

mdrut, you're right. A big run like this would take a LOT of planning. Unfortunately I don't think I'll have time to take part in the planning, being that I am a full time student and have a job as well, and will have several other commitments in the coming future... but I'm gonna do my damn best to make any run planned!
