I have my axle mostly stripped, ready to paint up and take to be geared tomorrow.

I am switching from a L/S unit to an open carrier with an aussie locker, but my open carrier does not have a tone ring. My question is, is the tone ring separate from the carrier, or do I have to have a carrier with a tone ring? I need to know ASAP so I can either try do disassemble the LS carrier or go on the hunt for another carrier.

Also is there a good way to pull the outer bearings and seals if I don't have a slide hammer?

Its seperate from the carrier. Take your LS one off and put it on the open carrier.

I finally broke down and went to AutoZone and got their loan a tool, but only after messing around with it for 3+ hours. :banghead:

or destroy the bearing cage, and grind down the race.

I ended up pulling out the cage and removing the bearings to let the slide hammer jaws get a good grip.

Lesson learned- a slide hammer is the only thing that works to pull bearings like that.

The saga continues- Its been a long, miserable day. I got the gears set up fine, but can't get the locker to go in and set up to tolerances. First, I didn't have the thrust washers, had to wait on the guy to get home to get a couple. Then with the washers, the locker is too tight in relation to the pin. The pin fits, but I can't get the minimum thickness feeler gauge between the pin and the locker.

I am getting really tired of messing with this, help me please or I am going to go open carrier.

A quick reply to my email tonight:

The spacer to cross shaft is one area where you can be much tighter
than
the specification provides for. We give you an ideal set of
specifications,
but if you can get .001/.002 between the spacer and the cross shaft you
are
ok. The real test is to button up the diff and do the wheel spin test
called
out in the manual/operators guide. If you get the wheels to spin and
hear
the click from the locker you are ok and the locker will perform
properly
and give you many years of reliable service.

:banghead:
