I purchased the parking brake hardware kit from autozone. There were no instructions on how to assemble it and I failed to note the direction of the brake shoe adjusting screw. The brakes were adjusted when installed but are not grabbing. There is no pawl that causes the screw to expand with usage. I am thinking one or both are on backwards. Standard drum brakes the knurled knob faces to the front but that applies only to drum brakes with a pawl.

One screw I adjusted till the brake grabbed and then I backed off. The other screw would not turn and I had to remove the brake assembly, put the knob in a vice grip and turn the screw. It is as if the screw worked itself against the knob causing the shoes to contract. They need to expand with usage, not contract, or at least stay exactly where they are.

Possibly that screw was already binding when installed and never worked in the first place. The following picture is of the kit I bought from autozone. Does it make any difference which way the screw (5) faces?

does not really matter much which way it faces as it is manually adjusted .but you would want to be able to adjust it from the acess hole in the rear of the backing plate .so just install it so you can adjust it from the hole in the back.
theres a black plug in the hole ,you remove the plug to adjust the screw .make sure you can see the star thru that hole is all.

Thanks - I finally got it back together and was able to tighten up on that screw. Had to use locking pliers to get the outside spring on.
