I have a Ford Explorer with a bad transfer case. (cracking and poping when in any gear and or range. I need to try and use the parts out of another transfercase or replace the old transfer case.

The Exploerer I have is a 96 with a V6, automatic tranny (jasper) and the transfercase is electric with the selector on the dash.
The original transfercase ID plate shows K0681 4405-07 411181 F57A-CA.
The other Transfercase ID plate shows G2703 1354-05 226602 FO7A B

can i use any or all of the parts to fix the origianl one or will they swap out?

Any help will be great. I am doing this as free work for a singel mom with a very small income.

Those are completely different cases.

Pretty sure you will need another case bearing these particular digits in the tag in order to swap with your '96 case (at least if you want to keep it stock configuration):

fast fix

If i can find one that would be great. Only problem is i am doing this as a free job for a single mom of 3 girls who is on a limited income. Any advice will be great. thanks in advance.

How generous! :) I sent you a pm, but I don't see IZ...

Oh, it's just an abbreviation for private message.

What kind of advice are you looking for?

Can is there any way to use the other transfercase. She can not afford one and the cheapest i can find one that is exact is 400.00.

Okay you have two transfer cases at hand: the 4405 (the stock one) and the other is the 1354.

Yes you can bolt in the 1354 in place of the 4405 -- however, you wont be able to connect the electrical. So yes, you can swap in the 1354 in place of the 4405 and get the vehicle on the road, as a "fast fix" -- and the process is very easy. But you wont be able to shift the vehicle into 4wd electronically (no big deal if its a "fast fix") because the electricals dont match. The driver will also get a blinking 4wd light on the dash as the computer thinks that the transfer case is missing because the shift motor can not be plugged in.

You'll also want to swap the VSS sensor from the 4405 into the 1354 to make sure the vehicle retains the right VSS gear ratio. After the VSS is swapped in, you'll need to follow the VSS wires and splice it into the vehicle's connectors because the 95-97 Explorers used that VSS sensor beside the rear output flange to perform calculations. This splicing shouldnt be too bad because you have the original 4405's wiring harness/connector to base off of.

Ignore / leave the front driveshaft out of the vehicle since the 1354 thats going in can not be shifted into 4wd so the front driveshaft is just dead weight at that point.

As IZ mentioned, the 13-54 will work temporarily to get the truck on the road, but won't be fully functional without some more work, and how much work you want to put into it is another issue.

Not to question the diagnosis, but have you tried pulling the front driveshaft out just to make sure it's the transfer case and not something as simple as a U-joint on the front driveshaft? Might be worth checking out if you haven't yet...

double check

I did try jacking it up and putting it on stands, I droped the driveshafts and it still done it. When i drained the transfer case i could feel chunks inside it with my pinky.

Is there any need to hook anything else up that is electrical on the 1354 besides the vss and the speedometer.

And a real dumb question is which one is the vss.

I see an electiral plug in at the same places where the speedometer plugs in on both transfer cases.

On the 4405 there are two sensors, the motor, and one wire that goes into the case itself.

On the 1354 there is one sensor, the motor and one wire that goes into the case itself.

No the VSS is the only thing that needs to be hooked up.

The VSS is right near the rear output flange... looks like this:

can we get a 1354 e shift to shift using the 4405 wiring/gem/ dash switch?

Son in law has a 97 sploder with the 2wd/AWD. 4 hi and 4 low switch
his 4405 t case is toast
I have a 04 Ranger 1354 t case, e shift

Has anyone put a 1354 e shift in place of the 4405? I plan to :)

Lots of people have done the swap to a 13-54. It'll bolt right in. However....

There's no way to make the electric shift 13-54 work with the 44-05 electronics. Their function is entirely different, and they're not wired to work the same way in any way, shape, or form.

Now, if you were heavily into electronics, you *might* be able to create a go-between interface box that would connect the 13-54 to the 44-05's electronics... It would need to simulate the 44-05 connection to the transfer case, sending the appropriate feedback back to the GEM, and control the 13-54 based on the commands from the system... But they function entirely different... It would be darn near impossible to do it.

But my question is: Why bother? Drop a lever in there and do away with the electric shift nonsense. Hundreds (if not thousands) have done it. :)

thanks!

searching for a manual shift 1354 and 2wd 97 auto GEM

If I cant find a manual shift 1354 we may have to homebrew a shifter for a e shift 1354 (already have the case)

I am wondering how complicated the e shift "touch drive 4x4" system is on my 1988, I imagine it could be piggybacked into a Gen II truck to work with the Gen II dash switch and control the 1354 t case motor..........hmmmmmmm

the 86-90 ranger and BII had this system, it has a stand alone t case shift control box under the dash... a very early GEM you could call it
