Hey all, I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the 4x4 in my 91. When I engage 4low i can hear the t-case make noise like its engaging the front driveline but the truck still remains in rwd. I'm not familiar at all with the first gen explorers, I have a 95 that sounds the same when I put it in 4low and It does go into 4wd. Not sure what's going on with the 91, any ideas? Thanks.

If it has auto lock hubs one or both might be bad. If you got into 4 low or 4 high for that matter, have someone look under to see if the front drive line is spinning. If it is then you probably have a hub issue. The auto hubs are pretty bad. I've had many problems with them. I swapped to manuals and never looked back.

Probably a stupid question but how do I tell if I have auto or manual locking hubs? Like I said I dont know much about the 1st gen explorers.

Nevermind, i went out and looked and they say automatic on the outside of the wheel.

it is very likely that your auto hubs have failed
You may have the last pair of gen I auto hubs in existence!
Why? because they SUCKED!
They would fail right when you need them the most

The fix is to convert to manual locking hubs, Warn or Mile marker make nice hubs. You will need the spindle nut hardware kit also

I still run auto hubs lol, I also have a spare set for when they fail, but I haven't had one fail yet, I'm just that kind of lazy I guess.

My original auto hubs are still running strong (as I knock on wood right now not to jinx myself for saying that out loud)! 😮

But, I did pick up a set of manual hubs from the pick-n-pull last year. I just need to get the spindle nut hardware.
Anybody have the part numbers for that? Will this one fit?
