98 ford Explorer
I have a 98 ford explorer XLT SOHC with transfer-case problems. No codes are popping up will not engage.
I was stuck on a snow covered road. Went to engage my 4H accidentally slipped into for low and pressed on the accelerator. The car Shook violently and my four wheel drive hasn't worked since. My people I've talked to told me to replace my T-case and did just that. With my new(tested used one) T-case in place I put it into 4H and gearing changed gave it that slight front end pull. Put it in 4L low range Kicked in Drove with Low gearing. Rounded a corner testing both 4L and 4H no hopping. Drove my Explorer into a snow bank to test it. IN both 4L and 4H same result. The car felt like it was engaged, Indicator lights both showed up. But now power was being transferred through the front Axel. If i really pinned the explorer on slick ground the car vibrates roughly like its trying to engage but Still NO 4 Wheel Drive. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Yeah it has in the past. If i go out driving on icy roads and I'm sliding out or lose traction a lot it eventually turns on. Also if i go out drifting in some cases the car does this weird thing right when I let off the accelerator i get a weird clunking with heavy vibration right after. Being that it is a Auto 4wheel drive my guess is its trying to kick in, It also could not be related at all I'm not sure.

Have you checked all your fuses and breakers? Sounds like the brown wire to the transfer has no power to it. Has the 4WD worked at any time since you have had it? Since it does the same with the new transfer case I would tap into the brown wire at the transfer case and send power to it that way. This would only be a temporary connection to check and see if the front axle gets power. If it does you need to find where the brown wire power is lost. If you leave the brown wire hooked up with 12 volts it is pretty much like locking the system into 4 High. In AWD the brown wire voltage varies as demand for traction varies.

This should help you start to narrow down what the issue could be. Theres probably hundreds of threads around the forum about diagnosing four wheel drive issues, and some of the better ones cover just about everything in one spot.
