98 Explorer Sport
A family member of mine saw a White 1998 Explorer Sport for Sale and was thinking of buying it for an extra day to day vehicle. He needs something with better gas mileage then his f-150 work truck, but still wants to be able to carry things and have extra room. It is a 4x4 with a 4.0 SOHC.It has 165k miles on it. The owner is asking 4800 for it. He asked me if that was a good deal or not. I thought it was a little much for having that many miles on it , but I don't know that much about buying vehicles. Anybody know what major things would need to be replaced at that mileage? And Is it even worth buying an explorer with that much mileage on it? Thanks

I wouldn't give over 3k for it. Thats about the going value now with the rising gas prices the market is WAY down

Its not going to get that much better mileage then the F-150. With that many miles and not much gain in mileage, its not worth it IMHO.

well it's like an 88 F-150 and it has a bunch of ladder racks and various equipment on it. With all that equipment and the engine having about 260k on it , the mileage is really below what it should be. So needless to say it's pretty much a beater truck. The blue book on the explorer is 3,600. Is 3600 still alot you think?

Tell him to get an Escort Sta.Wgn. Good milage & he can haul stuff.

YES!!! a station!!!! station wagons 0hn!! and most (if not all) get better gas mileage than our explorers!

I am sure I owe WAY more than my X is worth, now that gas prices junped so high. :(

If he or she wanted a explorer to save gas,um...not happen. If they want it to go out on the weekend I say go for it.See if they can get for less than 3k,mine inwhich I bought last year were $2600 and $2200 and until here lately they been great granted I've dog'em them and now its starting to show (opps) I could careless about the gas prices.(BECAUSE I JUST GOT A 87 ESCORT :D )But, I like my Xs.My original idea was if one broke down I'd use the other well that did'nt work out their both broke down  and I have an engine on a cherry picker waiting for me to put the crankshaft into tommorrow, actualy today.Sorry started floating off the topic.I'll be positive,if you/they can pick it up for a better price go for it.......

Thats way too much for that kinda mileage...

I just picked up my 99 Ex from a dealer with 100k on it and in cherry shape for $4000 cash. With gas prices this high you can really pick up the SUV's and trucks cheap now so take advantage of it.

I paid 5 thousand for a 95 with 91k miles on it. I wouldn't buy that at all myself, keep looking, good deals are out there.

BTW 95 XLT 4wd automatic fully loaded

If he does want to buy it, personally I even think 3 thousand is too much, I wouldn't go higher than 2 myself, with the gas prices and the high mileage on it.
