My sister had an old mercury capri (about the size of a 2 door escort) that she said I can have for free, but I need to go pick it up cause it doesn't run. I do not have a hitch on my ex yet cause I don't have the money, but I plan to get one in a few months. Can I get away with towing it using a car dolly (2 wheels up, 2 wheels on the ground) from a ball on the rear bumper (which would be alot chaper than having it towed by someone)? It will only be a one way trip with the car, from her house to my house which is about 30 miles total. Then the car will remain at my house. Will I risk damaging the ex very bad just towing for this short distance using the bumper? I have tried searching but did quite find what I wanted. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

You'll be fine towing one of them with a tow dolly. There isn't much tongue weight but it might be to much for the bumper, I think the max capacity for the bumper is only like 2 or 3k lbs, you're probably going to want to get a reciever hitch to be on the safe side.

Step Bumper hitch ?

Are you talking about towing with the step bumper hitch. If so it is rated for up to 3500. I tow a 2000lb boat and have never had a problem.

Yes, I am talking about putting a ball on the bumper and towing from that. Also I found out the weight of the car is about 2400 pounds.

In my younger, more brilyant days, I towed a 5,000lbs truck on a tandem flatbed trailer 600 miles from the bumper. :D

Yeah, me too. It should be fine and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have a 98 Sport OHV and i have towed a friends mustang on a 3,000lb car trailer several times for about 70 miles each time on the bumper, and mine is just fine.

yeah you should be fine with the bumper.... only time i have seen one flex is when my dad was pulling a 18inch tree trunk up to the cabin to cut up.... it was about 30 ft long..... when he took off you could see the bumper flex on the truck (we had a chain around the ball on the bumper) *was a lease vehicle and being returned next week* it flexed quite a bit till he got it sliding on teh ground then he took off like a bat out of hell... so i wouldnt worry about it too much....

lol he pulled a whole damn tree! Would have been funny if he had to slam on the brakes.

Thanx evryone for your help, I really appreciate it. Now comes the part of getting a dolly. One idea is to get one from u-haul, Cause I do not know anyone else who rents them in the area. I shaved all the emblems off so I might be able to get away with telling them its an expedition or mountaineer. If that does not work then I would use my dads dakota just to pick it up and drop it off, but hook it to the ex once I get it home. I Can't use the dakota for towing cause it has no hitch and the bumper is only rated at 1500 lbs, but it should be okay for towing an empty dolly.
