I want to buy an explorer 4x4 v6 auto from 1997 ish or newer. I also need to be able to flat tow behind my motor home. In through extensive internet searching I have found an installation manual for the neutral kit and reprogramming instructions, as well as shifting instructions for 2001 and newer, but no luck finding anything for the older model years. I know the kits are difficult if not impossible to find, but also found out that the kit is nothing more than an led light and instruction stickers. I am not adverse to wiring my own led, others have done it successfully before me. my question is this...are the 2000 and older v6 models just a led light as well? anyone have the programming instructions and shift procedures? The ford garage here will do the programming if I have the procedure, they just don't know what to do without instructions.

I assume the 4x4 with the electronic shift will work, but not the awd without the shifter switch on the dash? hopefully someone has this info. I believe it is 2000 and earlier, but might be 1999 and earlier.

All built after December 1996 w/ V6 & 4X4 are tow-able with the kit.

anyone have the programming instructions and shifting sequence for 1996 to 2000 models? can anyone verify the harness location and wire color for the led install?

how can I get a full text of TSB 13879 NHTSA 620279? does anyone have this? I think it might have the programming instructions I am looking for, as it pertains to replacing the GEM in vehicles equipped with the NTK.

I have a 1996 Explorer that I have towed many miles. I have all of the original instructions on hand. I will send you an email.
I have just removed the neutral tow indicator light from my 1996 and am going to install it on my 2010 Explorer.

I took a picture of the instructions. I hope that it is readable.
The part at the end where you have to remove the radio is just so that you can install the decals.
Again, all that is needed is the indicator light and the Gem module has to be programmed for neutral tow.

thanks a lot luap. great info

Thanks for the info. May go back to this route if the dealer can actually find it. Mine is clueless. I went to this gizmo. Works great. All I had to do is put in an extra hole mid way between 4hi and 4lo and now I have a mechanical neutral. http://theshiftster.com/shiftster-story Modified the front hubs with a simple video on you tube.

Thanks I have found the directions for all the newer models but they have you push the 4 auto button and that's kind of hard to do when its a rotary switch and not a push button. I was thinking that just the brake peddle for 5 seconds would do it but kind of didn't want to screw it up in case I was wrong ( I have been once or twice). Also I can't count the number of times I have told someone "if it has 4 low it has a neutral". Some people just don't get it!

By any chance do you still have this information. I know it’s been a few years. LOL
I’m trying to get my 99 Explorer setup to tow
