2006 Ford Ranger Fx4
Hey all. Glad to be here. I do not have an explorer but I do have a 2006 ranger fx4 with the 4.0. I did do about all the research I could possible handle before posting this. One of my leads sent me here and did find some help but not exactly what I was looking for so here I am making my first post.

My 5r55e tranny won’t go into a forward gear. Reverse works fine. It’s started being delayed a couple days ago in D. Would tap the gas then it would pop in. Now it doesn’t go in unless I really rev it up, but, once it’s in gear it works perfect. Shifts super smooth, no hesitation at all. A buddy of mine was here most of the day, brought his expensive scan tool and we checked everything we could’ve with it. It will even run each solenoid, tell voltage of them and everything. Seemed like every solenoid worked, could even hear the solenoids working. All the pressures seem to be good too. I also adjusted the bands with no luck. We checked the pressure test port on the drivers side too and it was good. I’m at a loss here. It’s gotta be something easy. But it has me so stumped

Welcome to this forum! Did you check the EPC pressure port (not the main pressure port)? Did you check the fluid level when it was cold then again when it was hot? Did you replace the filter?
Thank you BrooklynBay! We didn’t check the epc port. Just the line pressure port. Not really sure where the epc one is at? Fluid is all new and full. I replaced the filter and fluid 2 weekends ago.

Were you experiencing this issue before you changed the fluid / filter? Did you use the correct Mercon ATF when you changed the fluid? These transmissions are a royal pain, I had mine rebuild on my 07 Ex at 80k mi due to 2nd to 3rd shift flare and shuddering shifts between every gear.

Yeah but not nearly as bad. I bought all the fluid at autozone and they set me up with the fluid. Pretty sure it was Mercon IV or V. Can’t quite remember. I put the Lucas oil in it also thinking it might help the delay. Turns out it didn’t. Lol!

So I just took the pan off. They’re are some very light metal in it. Looks like a red metallic paint. But not bad I don’t think. Well. I mean I did just put new fluid in it and only drove it maybe 40 miles. Is this a bad sign of something? If I could upload a pic of it I would. I did order a new epc solenoid and valve body gasket set.

Nevermind. Here’s a pic

I will add I just checked all the solenoids and they all ohm’d good. I wouldn’t be so worried but I only paid $1000 for this truck. Hate to take it to a tranny shop and have to spend $2500+ for work. Actually that won’t happen. But I also hate to just throw parts at it, put it back together and find out it’s doing the same damn thing. Then have to take the pan off again and get covered in oil again

Also. Can anyone tell me what this tranny is? Got it with truck but I’m pretty sure it’s not the same. The trans that’s currently in the truck had a cracked servo cover. So I went to my other garage, took the cover off this trans, went up to my other garage to switch it and the cover was different. O.d was the same but where the servo plunger fits in the cover was a different size. But I would just like to know what this spare trans is. It is from a ranger. That’s all I know. Sorry for all the questions but I don’t get too many days off to fix my stuff. Today is the day. Lol!

New update. I put a new valve body gasket in. Put it all back together and while it was on jackstands I put it in reverse and forward and everything worked perfect! Until I took it off the stands........ same f^*#ing thing is happening!!! Sorry for the language but 3 times taking the pan off and now putting it back together and on jack stands it worked perfect. But not now!!! I have a snap-on scan tool. In park the epc psi is 30. In reverse it’s 70. In neutral 30. Drive 44.9. 2nd 34.9. 1st 44.9. Could someone help please?!?! For some reason it says epc voltage is 0.01. Which I don’t thing that’s right.

I just got pissed cause it wouldn’t go into drive so I revved it up pretty high. Probably about 3500-4000 rpms and it popped in. What in the world is wrong?!

Yes. It was a little bit low but I don’t think that’s the problem. It was full the last 2 times I put it back together and did the same exact thing. Still have reverse, have to rev it up a lot for it to go into forward, and once it’s in forward it works perfect. This all started when I put a new filter and fluid in it. It was a little delayed before I changed filter and oil but nothing like now. I did how ever put that Lucas tranny additive in. It was the first bottle I put in the transmission upon refilling it. The stuff was really thick. So I’m thinking with that stuff being that thick that when I started the truck it sucked up that thick stuff first and blew something, with the fluid being that thick. And the first time I drove after the filter and oil change the one servo cover on the side of the tranny cracked somehow and was leaking and it’s just been downhill from there. I just ordered all new solenoids earlier this evening. If that doesn’t fix it I’m burning the ***** down.

Did you check to see if the 4 x 4 filter has the deep sump attachment? If not, then it's similar to a regular low profile filter which is made for a standard pan (not a deep pan), and won't draw fluid correctly since it's missing the deep sump attachment.

Yup it does have the deep pan and deep sump attachment.

Your fluid does not look good for only 40 miles. Now you stated it worked on the jackstands but not on the ground. Consider when on jackstands there is no load on the wheels.

Seals are good. I put a new filter in it each time I dropped the pan
