Lathe

Understand boring bar is the way to go, chucking a 3 jaw which is self centering (that is a relative term) should not be trusted for close tolerance work. Properly chucked and verified true on the dial gauge to min. allowance is the correct method to be followed. Offset hole doesn't really pop out at me in the photo but know your right about it's orientation.

Sector shaft

Is the sector shaft slightly tapered gear to end shaft or is the shaft parallel along its entire length, like the output shaft?

Doubler shaft

Okay heres the deal on the shaft for the doubler, it's been done and it works, but how long will it survive on the rocks, slick or otherwise. Have you read the second article Ranger station tech section? Quite similar in approach but at the end it had a few updates about problems with survivability etc. I won't critique his work or second guess anybodys work unless I have first hand knowledge and a lot of information, but as I stated in a previous post this evening, there is a potential weak link and the shaft is it.
There is a tremendous amount of pressure exerted on the minor diameter of this shaft and the loads may be too great for this conversion to work dependably at the outer limits of off roading, ...factors such as material strength, diameter of shaft, drive train shock (loading and unloading), vehicle weight, power input, tires and wheels...just a few factors of the top of my head. I have an ex-employee who is a metallurgist who worked designing transmissions for Buick division of General motors before coming to work for my old company as a design engineer and I will give him our problem to solve...if he comes back with a qualified yes I will build your shaft for free if you have not already done so and at least one for myself as I can see no other problem with the coupling that is a deal killer other than the upper limits that were initially designed & manufactured into the Borg Warner units. Gear reduction of an order of ten will eventually cause a failure in the stock design, but a lot of crawling might occur before this happens. Might sound as if I'm down on the doubling but quite the contrary I'm just cautiously jazzed and if Bruce comes back and says it is a screwed up idea I'll still make you one shaft as best as I can (which is pretty good)lol! Got to go look at a B2 latter.

rock and roll man, im going to defer to your expertise at this point, last thing i want is a broken doubler shaft while out in the lave flows or worse when im on a trip to moab or something, let me know what you find out

Doubler info

Get back to you on the engineers evaluation of shaft strength, let's rely on his expertise not mine! Couldn't get the B2 started last night but the owner gave me permission to come back in the daylight and mess with it...does have the 1350 case, but he wasn't sure if it was good or not. It has a lot of surface rust but no rot. Body is pretty straight, interior is bad...price is about right.

Check janderson4010 4.0 liter build link for continued posts on his 1354/1350 doubler build etc.

Broncobra

Been chasing rabbits with Jon about his doubler build & it's been informative & fun for me, also chasing parts and looking at a couple of buildable or donor B2's and Explorers. I need a 1995 (or newer) disk brake equipped 8.8 Ex. for the Broncobra build & a complete B2 for a chop top (half top) 4.0 liter that I would eventually like to build. I've spent the rest of my time on customer jobs.
Short version no progress on the truck, so I'm taking the Bronc out this evening and gonna blast some night runs on the Canadian river. This is totally flat stretches of white sand that stretches for more miles than I can carry fuel for & in some places more than a mile wide. It's also known for quick sand so staying away from what little water remains in the main channel is wise as is keeping the rig on the move. Lot of wild life on the move also big pigs & deer especially. I'll just stick to wide open stretches and out of the brush tonight. Just an excuse to get out on hopefully a cool night. Camera is on the blink, works well enough in the daylight but not so much on flash, but I'll try to get some pics to post.

Gassed up and ready to roll, oops better get the plates back on her! Night runs are a blast..

man thats gotta be a blast running down those riverbeds with that much power, we take our rigs out to the saint anthony sand dunes sometimes, thats a lot of fun as well. we also have a riverbed i used to drive down to go fishing, my buddy and i would race down that thing my bII vs his 93 toyota pickup, i whooped him everytime, and that was before the 4.0, good times

WoW that is one Awesome Build!!!!

River run

Dunes are way cool, we have great dunes (Little Sahara about 90 miles North of my location in S.W. Okla.) and I am planning a trip soon, but the river beds are close about 35 miles and can select from several different locations...all about equal distance and just as awesome. I thought I would beat the holiday rush, but there were a couple of dozen vehicles out already when I arrived...buggies, 4 wheelers and the mixed Jeep, SUV, PU etc. I didn't bother swapping to the big swampers as I wanted to drive over and they aren't too good on the highway plus I wanted to make a few higher speed runs if conditions were right and I could safely do it around the other trucks. Met some nice folks most of which were young enough to be my grand children gave a few rides to the pretty ones and popped the hood for the guys. I'm even getting used to them calling me Pops! I forgot my camera, I'm bad about doing that, but it probably wouldn't have done me much good. One guy had a neat camera mounted to the windshield frame of his Jeep that took fantastic videos and pictures in high def that he said was made for automotive use...I'd like to buy one, but I need to figure out an easy way to post pictures on the forum, guess I need to hire a Jr. high kid to give me lessons...I'm pathetic!
Great time had by all, I'm not a drinker so I wasn't comfortable with beer and driving, but I was impressed by the courtesy that was very apparent and hope no one was hurt after I headed home. I usually go during the week to avoid such issues and I can blast a few quick runs and feel safe while doing it.

Texaco Chevy Tanker

Put in the 3/16" thick rubber mat over insulation...driver and pass. side floor boards with the V8 were getting too hot for cowboy boots and I feel pretty silly wearing those fey looking Nomex booties. lol...Chevy tanker shot didn't load, probably just me.
Got to get rid of the shine in the ****pit...all black brother.

Trying to figure out my camera settings at home...hopefully this is a fair shot of the 1933 Chevy Texaco tanker restore. Antique gas pump restoration and oil company signage & advertising is another of my interests. Anything to keep me busy, broke and unemployed!

Sounds like you had a blast.
When it comes to this computer and downloading all the pics and moving files, that's the time I start calling the younger folks in the family.

The camera mounted on the Jeep your talking about is probably a GoPro, i was going to get one. They even strap on a helmet.
The tanker truck made me salivate on my keyboard.

I collected the whole series of Texaco die cast planes, took over 10 years and then sold them all on Ebay. Only took them out of box to inspect.
The first one I paid around $30 and got $300 for that one when sold.

Go pro

Thanks Rookie for the Go pro info I'll look into it as my buddies have gone in out of the summer heat(like the old dogs, under the porch) & no one wants to chronicle the "old man's" album or work on the ride either. You must be born under the sign of Cancer die cast antiques in general and your Texaco planes are truly wonderful examples of the joy and passion of collectors, but I also have sold most of the things that I put together over the years and I just look at it as giving others pleasure in my interests, but I know you felt some remorse as you took your profit upon selling those personal treasures, as have I. That being said I look at the Tanker & dread the day when someone else calls her "mine"!

Thanks Much!! But my work is Nothing compared to what you have done & the stock 4.0 OHV is reliable but not alot of fun...

I love seeing custom one of a kind work you have done!

Jon you guys seem to have a great deal of variety to offroad, don't know why I was suprised when you mentioned the St. Anthony dunes, but I was...dunes, rock gardens, mountain trails, river beds...probably some desert runs too? Idaho!!! Still let you shoot things and you get all the spuds you want, about perfect.

lol yeah we get pretty crazy, desert runs yes, we just got done designing my 3link and i think its gonna do pretty dang well running down those sandy desert roads, good enough the back won't be able to keep up anyway. yeah shoot all the spuds i want... wait.

Blackin' the shine

Finally decided to paint some polished aluminum...****pit is next to go black out, wheels and rollbar/lights & hood pins will be the only shine.
