I purchased a 2003 Explorer that was originally purchased by the US Marshall service and from my research it would appear to be in dark mode meaning the dome lights do not come on when the door is opened, nor will the interior light come on when dimmer switch is rolled to on position but will come on when individual map lights are turned on.
The door ajar light in dash comes on when any door is opened and the cargo light comes on in the back and door ajar light goes out when doors are closed. I have had the Ford techs look at it when they reprogrammed a set of keys and key fobs for me but they could not find anything in programming to disable the dark mode feature.
I have read that in the Crown Vics of the same era there is a wire that can be disconnected under the dash that will enable/disable this feature but can not find any info on Explorers
