I have a 2009 explorer 4.0 4x4 with a blown transmission. Will a 2006 explorer 4.0 4x4 transmission and transfer case swap over with no problem?

Are the gear ratios the same with the T case? Otherwise the trans should be fine.

Did they change the gear ratio on the transfer case from 2006-2010?I haven't changed any gear on the 09.

No but ford offered two different gear ratios on your vehicle. I can’t remeber what they are off the top of my head but one was a towing ratio and one wasn’t.

3.55 (w/o HD tow package) or 3.73 (with HD tow package) for the V6.
All V8 models got 3.55, regardless of towing package.

Ok my 2009 is came equippd with a tow package. I' not sure about the doner vehicle. How would I go about confirming that on the 06 transmission and transfer case? The doner is no longer in the vehicle.

I do not think there is a difference in TC between the HD and non HD models.
Same for transmissions.

I'm pretty sure the gear ratio differences were in the rear end (rear differential). The transmission shouldn't be affected nor should the transfer case.

I guess I should include the front diff in that also.

T cases do match the rear end gears in gen 2 exploders with the same engine and basic trans design. Don’t see why a gen 4 with the same stuff has different rules.

When I check the auto recycler's parts lookup, it shows different transmission part #'s for 2009-10 versus 2006-08 Explorers with the 4.0. While they may be the same transmission, it appears that something is different between them that makes them not a direct hookup and go. (Another source shows the same thing for remanufactured units.)

The rear end gear ratio has nothing to do with the transmission or transfer case in Gen 4 Explorers. Gen 2 knowledge does not transfer direct to Gen 4.

Does anyone know what the difference is for the 06 to the 09 transmission?

Looks like MNgopher went to a bit of trouble to look that up for you. What difference does it make why - it doesn't appear to be compatible. Thank him and move on.

Thank you for the input All. As far as moving on, maybe I should ask the correct question. What would I have to change on the 06 model transmission to make it compatible with an 09. Is it possible and if so what would I need? As for the reason why? I have access to an 06 transmission for a great price. MNgopher thank you for all the input and advice.

Go to auto zone or advance and ask for a quote for a tranny for both an 2006 and a 2009. See if you get the same tranny. If so, you should be golden.

That has already been determined. You can look them up on line. From nearly any source, the 06-08 Transmission has a different part number than the '09-10 Transmission.

The OP has now asked what is different between the two. I can't answer that, only that they have different part numbers. It could be as minor a slight differences internally, or not....
