New muffler shopping time

I had a Flowmaster 70 series on my 96 OHV and it was just noticiable around town. I couldnt hear it on the hgwy. I had duals on that X also and I'm sure they added a little extra sound.

I tried a Magnaflow on my 5.0 and hated it. I ran them on my '97 Cobra and didn't much care for them there, either. Lots of drone on both, and they didn't sound that great on either application.

I've got a current thread regarding Flowmaster drone. Spoke with a tech rep from Flowmaster at the local GoodGuys show yesterday, and he said I should switch from my Delta Flow 50 series to the SUV 50 series; the bigger case is supposed to make it a lot quieter on the inside, and a little quiter outside. Don't know if I want to cough up the bucks to see if it really makes a difference.

I've never heard a Borla I didn't like, though I've never heard one on the 4.0 SOHC. They're pricey. I still think my favorite, for noise and cost, is the turbo muffler. It doesn't matter if it's GM, Dynomax, or generic muffler shop brand. They sound good, they make good power on a stock motor, and they're relatively inexpensive.

Thats funny since their ( Flowmaster's own website ) says different, not actually says but indicates from the attached pics,

I definitely think something's amiss there. I could not hear my SUV 50 until I put it to the floor.

How did it sound inside the truck at steady highway speed ( ^70 MPH )?

The 40 is way too loud for me; I have ridden in an Explorer with that miffler.

You think its that bad? I was looking at getting the 40 series cause I can get it 125 installed (I guess thats a good deal?) can you describe since you have heard this setup, loud deep sounding or whiney sounding?

The sound was an obnoxious drone at 70 MPH.

Hey Al, what muffler do you have on there now, and why are you getting rid of it?

Its a no-name, free flower from my local exhaust shop.

The muffler has great performance, sounds really nice when you get on it, but the drone, that damn drone is dinally driving me to seek another.

Well one thing I was warned about from the first shop I dealt with and that's that performance and cabin sound are mutually exclusive. I see that now. I've put all sorts of sound deadener in my X and while it has killed the drone a bit, I still hear it. Don't get me wrong, I like my current setup, but if I wanted a quiet ride, I'd probably need an OEM (or equivalent) muffler.

It's too bad you can't "try before you buy".

As an FYI, it is around 120 km/h (70 mph) where the drone becomes most noticeable to me, BUT it's much better than the Magnaflow.

The performance that I seek is mileage, not speed.

Al, I had no idea you were a mileage weenie. ;)

Guilty as charged; how many guys do you know who get over 30 MPG in an Explorer?

Only one.

My cousin has the 50 series on his V8 and it is very quite. I figure it would sound pretty good on SOHC as well. I have 40 series on mine with cut offs and boy is it loud, but thats how I like it. My cousins is very quite even out side.

Didn't take it on the highway much but when I did, I hardly noticed it. Pretty quiet at steady highway speed.

My SUV 50 series goes in tomorrow Yeeha, ill et you know how it sounds on wednesday

magnaflow makes a high flow resonator. It might be an alternate addition

Driving through the mountains in western Maryland this past weekend, I took it up to 90 before going down the other side of the mountain.
According to my Scan-Guage I was getting 168 MPG at that point
:)

Anybody have an Aeroturbine installed? Or experience with one? I keep hearing about the Flowmaster 40 and 50, but I have heard the Aeroturbine provides better performance and MPG but may not be as throaty a sound as the 40....
I'll probably end up with either a 50 or the aeroturbine....thoughts?
