I found a new engine for the zuk today..

2001 Suzuki Vitara 2 liter. Double the HP, probably double the torque, only 50k miles on it. Vehicle was t-boned, so the engine bay was in perfect shape.

Bad part of this: It is not a California smog legal transplant, so the zuk will be going green sticker in April.

Sweet...more power is always nice. :D  So when you say double, do you mean about 115-125hp?

It's not worth it to try and put all the smog equipment on it? It'll bolt right up to the sami tranny?

The problem is the ECM is also the ABS controller, the dash controller, and whole bunch of stuff controller.

So even though I could get it to not throw an engine code by putting the missing sensors on, it will throw a code for the ABS. Automatic smog failure for ANY SES light, even if it is not engine related.

I'm not bolting it up to a zuk tranny - I'm bolting it to the toy tranny/tcase combo I have. It will make for a fun ride, I will be able to drive around in high-high now and not have to listen to hamsters in love..

As for power, the 1.3 is about 65hp, the 2liter is at least 125hp. The 2 liter also only adds about 100lbs to vehicle, so weight doesn't go up much also.

I just got the FSM and wiring diagrams.

Everything I've said, toss it.

I may actually be able to get this sucker to pass smog in CA.

So, an update:

1) the WU-TWC is missing, but that may not be the worst part - The sucker will not fit into the engine bay with it on anyway. It would have to be moved down the exhaust about 6". doing so may cause it be disqualified by the smog people.

2) The gas tank needs a sensor. Again, modifying the gas tank could possibly cause disqualification.

Yes, I'm planning on calling the smog ref's once I get to a point where I can pull codes from the PCM/ECM.

In Colorado the CHECK ENGINE light = failure rule has changed.
With OBD-II they changed the rule because you can have a ABS sensor or similar that set the CEL, even though the tailpipe emissions are fine.
No longer is it an auto fail when your CEL is illuminated.

What is the WU-TWC?

Tom you can wire in a resistor to take the place of the gas tank sensor (pressure sensor) as well as other emissions sensors.

WU-TWC is a Warm Up-Three Way Convertor.

In CA, CEL = automatic failure. Even if it's NOT an emissions related CEL.

Wiring in a resistor.. Hmm.. I wonder if they can find that? The vehicle would have to go to a smog referree, and they check EVERYTHING.

yeah that sucks.
Register it at Ricks in AZ :P or green sticker.

CA emissions NAzi's suck.

Funny thing is no matter what this powerplant is more efficient then the original Sami engine, blows less emissions, but NO they dont care :)

Now with that said I know I could have used a older Mustang PCM (EEC-IV) and still run my Gt-40 engine (remove DIS, add distributor in my case). What I am getting at is could you use say a 95 PCM with this engine, still fire the EFI and connect to all the sensors?

Its possible ;) Will depend on your smog guy though.

Yea, I will probably be putting potentiometer in there just to keep the computer happy. One less code to read would be good!

Some my emissions sensors are hooked up to the computer, but not hooked up to the emissions :P
The 5.0L explorer has two canister purge valves bascially, I only need one, but since the computer is looking for two, one is just hanging there on the end of the harness.
Later I plan to delete the pin from the PCM to this sensor with a computer flash.
But my point is many sensors are just the computer open or close, no return voltage, so it does not actually know of the canister purge is working, only that it told it to open and it was there.

I believe a CA referee will be more interested in you making the donor vehicle emissions system work and retainaing the major components of it, then they will be the wiring details of how.
But then again I have heard of really picky and some people passing easy??
case by case?

This looks like a fun project :)

No change at the moment - I've got the parts for engine mounts, just haven't had the time.

Been cleaning the garage, rebuilt the bench, made shelfs to get a load of crap off the garage floor.

Then I need to work on the VFR - needs tires, oil/filter change, plugs, air filter and work on the body; I need to change out the upper fairing.

I did rebuild the front frame hangers for the zuk - the old mounts broke loose up on Shaver Lake and didn't have room for the military wrap, and so I moved the front hanger forward, down and made them much beefier. I need to finish those too - need to cap and then paint, and then re-build the winch mount.

Here's what I've been working on the zuk.. new front spring hangers.

they aren't done, I need to close them up and paint.

Sounds like a great project Tom. Double the HP=double the fun. Just like the Doublemint Twins... Ok, NOTHING like the Doublemint Twins ;)
