Time for new tires. Presently, I have the Bridgestone Dueler H/L on my 2000 AWD. Local guy is recommending Firestone Destination LE. I am looking for quiet and smooth as we do little or no off-road driving. Anyone have any experience with these tires? Thanks -

Those tires just scream bad idea. ohmygosh.

Who is this "local guy"? a tire retail center like belle tire, discount, or a firestone?

Local guy is just a 1 man shop that has always been fair with me on work with my daily drivers and '70 Mach 1. What happened is that about 5 years ago I got the new Bridgestone Dueler H/L on the truck. Shortly after they started to make a bunch of noise in the front. Long story short I needed new lower ball joints. But the cupped tires on the back and the good condition quiet ones from the back on the front. All good for many miles but not the rear ones that were cupped are so bald on the insides that I am afraid for my wife to drive it, risking a flat or blowout. When I called he recommended the Destination LE.

Look at the Michelin TLX m/s2
Go to tirerack.com and read the reviews, then compare to what your guy is trying to sell you. They were the best thing I ever did to my Explorer. I've run up about 10K miles and they still look like the day I installed them. Well worth the price tag they come with.

I am now a huge fan of cooper's discoverer series. The AT3 tires have some of the best reviews around. I have them on my truck, and when it gets time for me to replace the HT's on my explorer, thats what I am going to put on.

I have had the Destination LE's on my Expedition for well over 2 years now. It is 2wd does not go offroad and I LOVE THEM. have been in a few evasive move senerios and they hold up very well. Also recently lost my rear air ride and and have sprigs and shocks works great for me!!

I'll second the vote for Michelin LTX M/S. Improved my ride ALOT from the dismal Wrangler RT/S that they replaced.

The Firestone Destination LE are discontinued, I think. They are on closeout on Tirerack. The replacement model is the Destination LE 2.

If you are considering the Destination LE or LE 2, maybe take a look at the Destination A/T. They have alot better customer ratings on Tirerack than the LE.

I concur with LTX, Cooper, and A/T probably in that order...

I have the LE's on my '97 Explorer, and I'll never buy another set of them. Tread wear is poor. Mine will be trashed by 40,000 miles (it is rated as a 60,000 mile tire). Previous tires delivered 65,000 and 70,000 miles, so it isn't my driving style. They were also terrible in the snow and ice, though I'd guess that is no longer a concern. Also very loud when worn.

If you are stuck on a Firestone, the Destination AT is an excellent tire, but probably not for your use. Otherwise, the recommendation for the Michelins is good too. (Though pricey up front).
