1991 Explorer XLT
Hi everyone. I've recently purchased a 1991 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L. I bought it at an estate sale after it had been parked in a garage for many years. In fact the last registration was done in 2010. With 74600 miles in it, my wife and I couldn't pass it up.
Lots of initial work done. Brakes, rear main and front pump seals, new starter, fuel pump, injectors, etc.. enough to have it roadworthy. With the major mechanical work done, im concentrating on the smaller items.
I've been following this forum for a while to help me diagnose issues and find solutions. So far, you've all been extremely helpful.
A couple of pictures for you all. The paint scheme would not have been my first choice but it was 1991.

Welcome to this forum! You could get a new paint job. Does it have rust? The mileage is low.
No rust at all. I'm keeping the paint like it is since it's a period paint job. That 90s look.

When you said that it's a period, I thought that you were referring to the red color. ;) It's hard to find them in this condition. What's the production date? It's on the sticker on the driver's side door pillar. I wonder if it's an early production.

Date is Dec 90. Original color is a medium Platinum per Ford. The previous owner did the paint job albeit a not so good fade. So call it a "custom" paint job. He also placed some wood strips on the doors inside and two small ones on the dash. That was a trend in the 90s although it would not have been my first choice.
The interior is the original red which is very hard to find. At the moment, I have the center armrest broken off and the driver door pull handle broken. Both are common in early Explorers. But I've fixes for both in mind.

That is a Unique paint scheme. You can make it work.

The brake pedal wear says 174 k miles though, so does the armrest. Just beware.
Shoot a close up pic of odometer, there is a way to tell if it's rolled over

Yeah, I was going to say the worn spot on the floor mat indicates he used the brake pedal as a foot rest.

I appreciate your post. But I have receipts from the brake work done indicating mileage at around 50K miles back in 2005. The armrest? That could be anything. Oh, I did have to replace the hood release pull. It was snapped smooth off. Who knows what was going on in there?
It was a company vehicle for a builder in my area. So, probably not operated as gently as it should have been.
However, i will take a close up of the odometer and we can figure out if it has rolled over.

The average car travels 12k miles a year, still possible there's a 1 in front of that number.

Welcome. Nice looking Explorer.
