I was thinking its in the trans but after googling around i found this site and read it could be the t case so here goes.

96 ford explorer 4.0 4x4 auto control trac had trans rebuilt by previous owner. He said since its been rebuilt it sometimes makes a grinding noise when shifting from park to reverse.

I have only noticed it doing this from park to reverse so obviously vehicle is not moving, foot is on brake. Always been in 2wd when it does it (never tried leaving it in 4x4).doesnt do it all the time.

When it makes noise i either go back to park or nuetral as quickly as possible as it sounds like gears stripping.

Finally had someone lay under it and listen to where noise is.its loudest at back of transfer case.tried to get it move in reverse when making the noise (no one was laying under it at that time lol) and it would barely move.

We removed the t case and cracked it open, not noticing anything out of the ordinary.plastic guides on shift fork looked fine.little bit of debris on filter screen but not alot.appears to be opened before as there is clear silicone on mating surfaces of case. I have a 98+ case that we split open to compare and it looks the same.there is a little slop in bores but was that way on both.

Asked a tranny guy and he didnt think it was in t case since it doesnt do it when moving. We tried probably 100 times to get trans to do it with no transfer case in vehichle and never could but trans guy said trans would have to have t case attached to put a load on it or else hold the output shaft which isnt advised.he then decided it very well could be a t case but not sure.figured i would ask some experts on here that may know. Thanks in advance and sorry if im posting in wrong forum.

any thoughts? just bought a t case today then had someone else tell me it could be a one way clutch in the trans???

I can't think of anything inside that transmission that would make a noise like that.

Your description of the noise and the problem makes me think the transfer case.

thank you for reply. the 1st guy i talked to is a heck of a trans guy BUT hes mainly GM so hear isnt familiar with explorers.im hoping this transfer that i bought will fix it.it wouldnt bother me personally but im worried it will progress to all gears.so you fell it could be in the t case even though the vehicle is in 2wd and not in a moving motion?

so you fell it could be in the t case even though the vehicle is in 2wd and not in a moving motion?

I have seen these kinds of problems with transfer cases, most of the time its the fork and or the hub (#11) that holds it into 2wd, the teeth or fork will wear and slip out of the planet.

There could be a possibility that the linkage could be pulling the hub out, like worn linkage parts or the motor.

Assuming you have the 44-05, if not it still applies to most transfer cases.

my t case is the CA for 95-97.the hub gears are a little worn, but not noticeably damaged or anything.we took shift motor of and turned shaft by hand.if its turned just a little and then try to spin the yoke by hand it makes a sound like what im hearing, considering turning by hand im only spining at maybe 40 rpm as compared to spinning at around 1000 rpm
