- 96 ford explorer 4x4
I was thinking its in the trans but after googling around i found this site and read it could be the t case so here goes.
96 ford explorer 4.0 4x4 auto control trac had trans rebuilt by previous owner. He said since its been rebuilt it sometimes makes a grinding noise when shifting from park to reverse.
I have only noticed it doing this from park to reverse so obviously vehicle is not moving, foot is on brake. Always been in 2wd when it does it (never tried leaving it in 4x4).doesnt do it all the time.
When it makes noise i either go back to park or nuetral as quickly as possible as it sounds like gears stripping.
Finally had someone lay under it and listen to where noise is.its loudest at back of transfer case.tried to get it move in reverse when making the noise (no one was laying under it at that time lol) and it would barely move.
We removed the t case and cracked it open, not noticing anything out of the ordinary.plastic guides on shift fork looked fine.little bit of debris on filter screen but not alot.appears to be opened before as there is clear silicone on mating surfaces of case. I have a 98+ case that we split open to compare and it looks the same.there is a little slop in bores but was that way on both.
Asked a tranny guy and he didnt think it was in t case since it doesnt do it when moving. We tried probably 100 times to get trans to do it with no transfer case in vehichle and never could but trans guy said trans would have to have t case attached to put a load on it or else hold the output shaft which isnt advised.he then decided it very well could be a t case but not sure.figured i would ask some experts on here that may know. Thanks in advance and sorry if im posting in wrong forum.
